Step 1: Prepare, Interior Door Painting Tools
Before painting, be sure to protect your floor as well as surfaces that may be stained. Lay a tarp on the floor and use masking tape for the door frame. Then equip yourself with Interior Painting Tools. For this work we recommend that you use:
- Abrasive paper
- Sandpaper
- Sponge
- Brush
- Roller
- Crowbar or chisel or door lifter
- Screwdriver
Once you have your tools at hand, you should ideally knock down your door. Start by opening your door wide and position it perpendicular to your wall.
Then place a wedge or a thin wooden board under your door so as not to damage your floor when you lift it. Using a crowbar, chisel, or door lifter, pull the door off its hinges.

Tip: a door is more easily painted horizontally by placing it on trestles. However, if you don't have the option, you can simply remove the handles and lock and protect the floor under the door well.
Step 2: Sand and wet the door
Once the door is released, remove the handles and locks. To facilitate the adhesion of your paint, scrub your door the first time with coarse-grit sandpaper and then a second time with medium-grit sandpaper. The goal is to make it as smooth as possible.
Tip: If your door is already painted, or damaged, you must strip it before sanding it.
Once your door is smooth, use a sponge or a cloth to dampen it, without impregnating the support, to reduce the drying time. This action will allow you to paint at your own pace, avoiding brush marks.
Step 3: Painting on Interior Door
Painting a door is done in two stages. You must first paint the sides (edges), then the two flat sides of the door.
To paint the edges of your door, apply your paint using a brush (paintbrush), from top to bottom and from bottom to top. More info on the paint to apply on our dedicated page.
Tip: If you want to paint your door in color, the inside and outside edges should be painted in a different color. Let's imagine that your door opens onto an orange kitchen, your interior edges (handle and lock side, tops, and bottoms) should then be painted in this color. If to assess your kitchen you enter from the living room painted beige, then your exterior edge (hinge side of the door) must be painted beige.
If your door has a raised frame, you can also paint it a different color than the one used for the rest of the door on the elements in the center. This allows you to create an effect of depth and the diversity of colors will allow you to put more emphasis on your door.
Before painting, the frames please ensure that they are perfectly cleaned and stripped for better adhesion of your paint. If you repaint on already painted frames, remove the old paint first. As with the edges, the paint is applied with a brush from top to bottom and from bottom to top. Two coats of paints can be applied, although one may be sufficient.
Step 4: Complete the site
Once the paint dries, all you have to do is replace your door. As when you removed it, replace your door so that it is perpendicular to the wall. Once properly placed, all you have to do is lower it gradually in its hinges. Put back the lock and handle you removed earlier and admire your work!
