Benefits of a perimeter drain
Posted: Nov 30, 2020
What is a perimeter drain?A perimeter drain is a system of treatment wells and drainage pipes that are dug into the ground around the entire house. The pipes have small slits so that the water can run into the pipes and be led away via the sewer system.
The drain pipes are connected to a sand trap well and a pump well, which is connected to the sewer system.
It is usually dug down to a depth of a few meters, as the pipes must be laid 30 cm below what is to be kept dry. If you have problems with damp basement walls, dig 30 cm below the basement.
At the same time, it is important to be aware that you must not dig further down than the foundation. Therefore, in some cases it may be necessary to make a casting of the foundation, which makes it significantly more expensive.
A filter of pebbles or gravel is laid around the pipes, and geotextile can be laid under and over the filter layer.
You can not install a perimeter drain yourself, as the pipes must be connected to the sewer system. Only an authorized sewer master may do so. If you want to save money, you may. make an agreement that you dig out to the perimeter drain yourself.
There are many benefits to using a perimeter drainIf you choose to invest DKK 175,000 or more in a perimeter drain and post-insulation of the basement walls, there are many benefits.First of all, the moisture problems in the basement are remedied, so you get a much better indoor climate. However, you should be aware that it can take a few years before the basement walls are no longer damp, so do not be disappointed if you can not feel the difference right away.
You will also be able to save something on the heating bill, but not so much that the establishment of a perimeter drain will pay for itself for the first many years.
It may well scare future buyers that there are damp basement walls. A perimeter drain increases the value of the house, and can make it easier to sell.
But do not build a perimeter drain if you want to sell soon, as the cost of it will not be reflected in the selling price. Do it for your own sake, and then see it as a bonus that it possibly. will be easier to sell in the future.
Obtain quotes from several sewer masters on perimeter drainsGallup has made a large survey that shows that only one in five obtains offers from several professionals when they need to have something done at the house. As a result, they have no basis for comparison at all when deciding whether it is a good offer. Most people also do not try to negotiate the price down, although it is often possible to negotiate a better price.
