Tips for Keeping Your Pool Balanced in winter
Posted: Dec 11, 2020
If we’re being honest, the vast majority of pool owners do not totally drain their pool for winter. We figure it’s not being used, so what’s the harm? As pool experts, we get it. But if you’re not going to drain the water, you must maintain your pool water’s chemistry. Balanced water is vital for a clean swimming pool as it helps prevent algae and bacteria buildup. When your pool water is maintained in the winter months, it makes it that much easier to start swimming once the summer months arrive.
As a pool owner, here are five tips for keeping your pool balanced during the cooler months:
Skim Debris and Clean out Baskets
Skimming the pool's surface by hand every few days is one of the fastest and easiest ways to keep your pool clean. Floating debris will eventually sink, becoming harder to remove. Use a long-handled net called a hand skimmer or leaf skimmer to remove leaves, bugs, and other unwanted items. Skimming significantly increases the efficiency of the pool's circulation system and lowers the amount of chlorine you'll need to add to your pool.
Vacuum the Pool and Brush Walls and Tile
Keep your pool clean and avoid any possible contamination by simply checking your pool’s water chemistry as regularly as you would in the summer. The experts at Kelly’s Pools are here to help, so give us a call today.
A pool should be vacuumed every week to keep water clear and reduce the amount of chemicals you need to add to it. There are many types of pool vacuums. If you have a manual design, work it back and forth all over the surface of the pool like you would if vacuuming carpet. It's good form to slightly overlap each stroke. Check the filter each time you vacuum, and clean it if necessary.
Check Your Water Level
Is your water level too high or too low? Your water needs to be right at the center level of your pool skimmer or pool tile for optimal results and performance. If the water is too low, it can cause the pump to run dry and burn it up. If the water is too high, the skimmer door will not work properly and will leave debris inside the pool.
Check the Ozone Generator
If you have an ozone generator, you have another level of sanitizer in the pool that needs to be checked. Ozone, which is a type of oxygen, is known to purify pools as it reacts quickly with contaminants in the water. It can also reduce the amount of chlorine your water will need. But make sure the light of your generator is on and working.
Keep Your Pool Cover Clean During The Winter
When opened in the spring, your pool may look like the black lagoon. There’s a better way than letting that happen, and then dumping a ton of chemicals in the water just to clear it.
Throughout the winter, use a pool cover pump to get the water off the top of your cover. Every time it rains or the snow melts, tend to your pool and get that water off the cover.
