Why Is My DPF Not Regenerating?

It is strange that most people have less awareness about the DPF specs. The Diesel particulate filter(DPF), is a device in a diesel engine that is responsible for the removal of the impure carbon particles(soot), from the exhaust gas.

If you are worried that your DPF is not regenerating, you need to proceed further.

Why Your DPF Is Not Regenerating?

There are many reasons due to which DPF stops regenerating. The top reason is attributed to the low amount of fuel. Make sure that the fuel in the tank is at least greater than one-fourth of the total capacity.

Secondly, you need to assess the mode that your vehicle is adapted to. When the DPF system is made habitual to work on low speeds, it cripples on the high speeds. Basically, there are two types on the basis of which the DPF works. Firstly, it is Passive Regeneration. It is the type of regeneration in which the regeneration happens due to vehicle driving at a high speed. At high speed, the exhausts get enough heat to burn the soot. However, there is Active regeneration for those who do not drive at high speeds. It is when the amount of soot reaches the maximum capacity targets the process of post-combustion fuel injection, to increase the temperature of the exhaust. The high temperature of exhaust renders to burn the soot and in this way, the regeneration happens at a low driving speed. Therefore, if the vehicle is adapted to regenerate actively it will stop regenerating at high speeds through passive regeneration.

Thirdly, any fault in DPF differential pressure sensor can also cause the dis-functioning of the DPF. The DPF differential pressure sensor is connected to the DPF and the ECU (Engine control unit). It estimates the amount of soot in DPF by stating the amount of pressure of exhaust, it, therefore, guides the DPF regeneration. When the role of the sensor is halted due to any reason, it will not be able to communicate for the regeneration process.

Many workshops offer DPF cleaning solution by scrubbing the blocked soot in DPF through a process called forced regeneration.

Learning If The DPF Has Stopped Regenerating:

Generally, there are the same indications for every vehicle but you need to check the specifics of your vehicle’s handbook. However, the generalized signs of DPF stopping the regeneration are:

The DPF light gets lit in the speedometer of your vehicle, it means it requires regeneration.

Moreover, if you notice that there is a reduced fuel economy, it means that the vehicle needs regeneration. The bulk soot in the DPF suffocates the engine. The engine consumes greater energy for variably low performance. In this way, your vehicle will consume more fuel than ever.

A considerably weak driving experience, which comes out due to a low performing engine is a signal of stopped regeneration.

How to Prevent the Vehicle from Stopped Regeneration?
  1. Take a long route once in a while. Regular short journeys stop the DPF regeneration.
  2. Avoid driving on a low amount of fuel.
  3. Use the right oil for the right engine.
