Disability Services refers to those governmental entities which specifically provide assistance to the disabled in their day to day lives. These disability support systems are typically provided through state and federal programs. There are also organizations that offer to coordinate the provision of disability services for specific groups of people, as well. In general, disability services are most expensive when compared on a per-individual basis.

Medicaid-funded long-term services are a less expensive option to nursing and state facilities. Long-term services may involve assisted living facilities, home health care, and disability income maintenance. Assisted living facilities help the elderly maintain independent living conditions by assisting with activities of daily living. Home health care provides assistance with bathing and dressing, but does not assist individuals with mobility impairments.

Those who are interested in pursuing a career that helps the disabled, should consider working at a community-based center, long-term care facility, nursing home, hospital, or other institution of higher learning. These employment opportunities usually have a wide range of responsibilities, depending upon the particular field of expertise. Those who work in the medical field to help doctors diagnose and treat conditions related to the body and mind. Community-based facilities provide a variety of services, ranging from cleaning, cooking, laundry assistance, and transportation to senior centers, mental health facilities, dialysis centers, and other in-home care options. Certified teachers may also be required to work with special students, children, and families. Those who are interested in working with the public can consider employment with state institutions, county and community-based organizations.

Those interested in pursuing a position in the education sector should consider employment with schools that focus on the development, management, or teaching of the developmentally disabled. These individuals can help develop education programs and accommodations that help these individuals achieve goals. Individuals employed in the special education arena should be prepared to provide instruction in both the classroom and onsite accommodations for disabilities.

There are many types of learning disabilities, and those who are seeking employment should be aware of the learning disabilities that they have and the employment roles that are appropriate for their particular situation. For example, if a person has a physical handicap, they should not assume that all physical disabilities are manageable. The employment roles for physically disabled individuals include attendants, interpreters, and tutors.

Those interested in pursuing a position in the medical field should familiarize themselves with medical terms, such as how to recognize and interpret medical records, and how to conduct routine operations. In this role, they will assist individuals with disabilities in accessing educational opportunities. Those working in the legal field can also have a role in assisting those with learning disabilities get equal access to legal services. Those in the educational field should consider speaking with individuals who are planning to pursue careers that require a great deal of contact with children, such as teachers. In the event of an educational emergency involving a child, these professionals should be able to provide assistance.
