Winter Maintenance Tips for Your Pool and Spa

The winter months are cold in Baton Rouge, which means your outdoor pool is probably going to be closed for the season. To prevent the need for extensive maintenance come spring and summer next year, though, you will want to follow some best practices for fall and winter pool care. Taking care of it early and maintaining it throughout the winter months can ensure that your pool is ready as soon as the weather is.

Keep your pool clean and free of debris

Autumn brings falling leaves and winter winds can dump those into your pool. Even if you are not swimming, it’s important to keep your pool as clean as possible. Using a Solar-Breeze NX, the solar-powered robotic pool skimmer, takes the labor out of cleaning your pool in winter. It works virtually around the clock to capture debris on the surface of the pool, before it has a chance to sink and decay.

Maintain Proper pH Levels in the Pool

Continue to test your pool’s pH levels weekly to ensure the water is staying balanced. Extreme pH levels can lead to staining and will make it harder to balance your pool when you are ready to swim again.

Protect Pipes from Freezing

There are few freezes in Baton Rouge, but it’s a good idea to run your pool pump during the coldest hours overnight. You will be able to decrease the number of hours you run your pump during the winter when the pool is not in use, and using a Solar-Breeze NX to keep the pool skimmed can cut that energy use even further.

Cover the Pool

Adding a pool cover can keep dirt, debris, leaves, and more out of the pool, plus make it safer for kids and animals—if your pool is not completely frozen, but it’s covered by a layer of snow or ice, animals or kids might try walking on it and fall in. Keep it clean by hosing it off before the cold weather comes.

Check the Ozone Generator

If you have an ozone generator, you have another level of sanitizer in the pool that needs to be checked. Ozone, which is a type of oxygen, is known to purify pools as it reacts quickly with contaminants in the water. It can also reduce the amount of chlorine your water will need. But make sure the light of your generator is on and working.

REGULARLY CHECK EQUIPMENT

Your pool equipment doesn’t just take care of itself. Here are a few things you should do during the winter months to make sure your equipment is well maintained:

  • Test your pool heater to ensure it’s in good working condition.
  • Clean your filter and keep your skimmer free of debris.
  • Make sure to run your pump during freezing temperatures to keep the system from freezing.
