5 Unusual Food Preparation Methods You Should Know About

Cooking is a basic life skill that everyone should learn. It’s not only a process to get food cooked but an art that can make or break the deal. In different regions of the world different and unique methods are used to cook food. Most of us are familiar with only a few of them like steam cooking and oven, etc.

If you love traveling and exploring, you will definitely know some unique ways of food preparation. Similar to cooking different food, there were a number of food storage methods used in the past. But now different fridges and freezers are used to keep the food fresh and hygienic. For example, to store pizza dough at a certain controlled temperature, pizza preparation fridge is used. And freezers are preferred for long term storage of frozen food.

There were different and unique methods of food preparation and storage in the past. But some of them are still in use like bamboo cooking. Although some of these methods sound weird but they are actually interesting. Here we have gathered a few of them for you:

Salt Baking Fish

In China method of salt baking is used to cook fish. This method is being in use for more than 2000 years. In this method, sea salt and egg white are used to cover a whole fish. It is ensured that there are no gaps before baking so, a very little mixture can escape, and fish can be cooked in its own steam. Then crack the salt to enjoy the perfectly seasoned fish.

The Method of Confit

Another very old and unique method of preparing meat is cooking the meat in its own fat. This method takes a lot of time as it is very slow, but it is worthwhile. This technique is a traditional method used in Spain and France Pyrenees.

Mostly duck legs are salted with herbs and garlic and then cooked slowly in their own fat. During winter meat prepared with technique can be stored for a long.

Cooking in Bamboo

Cooking in bamboo is practiced in South Asia, Thailand, and Nagaland regions majorly. It is a traditional way of preparing food like meat, fish, and rice. To prepare food, first cooking ingredients like meat, sticky rice, and coconut milk are used to fill banana leaves. And then the bamboo stick is cut into half and filled leaves are stuffed in between them.

There is another way in which hollow bamboo sticks are stuffed with the ingredients and then banana leaves are used to seal them. Then bamboo sticks are placed onto coals. When the liquid is completely absorbed, this delicious dish is served in the halves of bamboo sticks.

Underground Cooking in Hangi

This method of cooking is almost similar in every continent. It is a traditional way of preparing food in New Zealand where on special occasions food is cooked in a Maroi Hangi. To prepare food, first big rocks are heated which are then buried into a pit oven that is called Hangi. Then baskets of food are placed on those stones. Meat is usually placed first and then the vegetables.

After placing food on the hot stones food is covered with a wet sheet and soil. It takes almost 3 hours for cooking.

Preparation of Ceviche Dishes

This is a pretty easy way of preparing food. In different forms and shapes, this dish is famous across Central America. In this method, only citric acid is used for cooking fresh fish. But when you will travel around the world, you may find some differences in ingredients as they vary everywhere. But the ingredients that will remain constant are fresh fish, onions, and citric acid.

This dish tastes great when you try it with a nice view of the sea.
