Makar sankranti puja vidhi

Makar Sankranti is a festival of Celestial importance as from this day the sun starts its northward journey and enters the Makar Rashi. This festival is celebrated to appreciate and thank the God Sun as The Sun is known as the Life giver. This festival is also of utmost importance for farmers as it translates into celebrating the completion of the harvesting season.

This festival is celebrated on 14th January every year and the preparations start in Hindu houses by cleaning the entire house and especially the Puja room or area. On this auspicious day, the person who performs the Makar Sankranti Puja in the house along with the other family members takes an oil bath in the early morning. The house is beautifully decorated with Rangolis and a garland of flowers and mango leaves is hanged in the doorways.

An idol of the Lord Surya is placed in the Puja room and various ingredients - Flowers, Coconut, Lamps, Holy water of the Ganges, Betel nuts and leaves, Akshata (a mix of rice powder or turmeric powder), A mix of sesame seeds and jaggery, that is, offered as the Pradsadam, Ellu Bella or sugarcane, which is also a part of the ritualistic offering that is offered to the Sun God are prepared.

Method of Performing the Puja

Step 1) At first, For Baayna, place two ghevars in one thaali, along with four black and four white til ladoos plus some money.

Step 2) Then sprinkle roli and chawal on the baayna.

Step 3) Now apply tilak to yourself.

Step 4) Cover your folded hands with the end of your saree or odni or dupatta and rotate them over the baayna four times.

Step 5) Then you may give the baayna to your mother-in-law by touching her feet. Baayna could also be given to the elder sister-in-law, nanad (husband’s sister) or any woman older than you. If you are doing puja alone in the house, you can keep the baayna in the puja room and later either give it to a Brahmin or it can be sent to the temple.
