Gone are the days when you thought that encryption is for highly confidential documents that needed to stay hidden from any kind of unauthorized access. Now, with changing technology, as things are now more about personal security and securing your Smartphone encryption is necessary. If you too own an Android Smartphone or an Android tablet then it is essential to encrypt your data. This is essential to secure your Android device from any kind of snooping. Let us now learn how to encrypt your Android device but it is more important to find out what is the need to encrypt your device.

Reason to encrypt?

Encryption is a necessity now because you have all your personal data on your device. You need to shield your information related to your bank accounts, online accounts, pictures, e-mail, messages and passwords that you often store on your device.

You would not want anyone snooping or getting their hands on your personal data. Another reason can be locking down your data to save it from hackers. Why should anyone else go through your personal data or access it on your device without your permission.

Why is Encryption Better?

Now, we know that you have already locked your data on your phone using a passcode or a password or a PIN, but is it enough? Your screen is locked but what about the contents or the data in it, that needs to be secured too. There are numerous ways one can hack into your device once they have access to it. Therefore, now it seems that you require encryption.

Encrypting your data is all about giving that complete security to your device. Encryption ensures that all your data is scrambled using a cryptograph. It is a kind of key that helps in securing your data. This means that even if someone is able to crack the lock screen code they will still be not able to get through to your data. Without the cryptograph key, it is impossible. One more thing is that if you think that your text messages will be exposed for giving way to forensic analysis, it is not possible.

Easy steps for encryption

  • First you need to remember that the following process is for KitKat and JellyBean OS
  • Ensure that your Android device is fully charged or else plug in the cable to charge the battery. The encryption is a 30 min time-consuming process. The process will be halted if your device shuts down mid-way. This will endanger your data and you might lose it.
  • Go to Settings and locate Security menu.
  • Go to Screen lock-> either choose PIN or Password and follow the command prompts to complete the process.
  • One thing that you need to remember is the encryption PIN that is required to break free the code.
  • Scroll to locate the options of Encrypt tablet or Encrypt phone whichever device you are using for the process.
  • Choose the option of Encrypt SD card by check marking against the checkbox. Move on to next and enter the PIN to confirm it.
  • Now choose the option of either Encrypt tablet or Encrypt phone. However, here you need to remember that if you want to reverse encryption then the only option is that of reset Android.
  • Now wait for the process to finish, during this time your device will reboot for a few times. This process will take at least 30mins to complete. When the process is complete, you will begin by entering your PIN/ password. This is essential and you need to remember it.

This way you will be easily able to encrypt your Android device without any hassle. You just need to remember the PIN that is used to unlock the encryption.
