There are many news outlet these days. And if you’re anything like me, you are aware that they aren’t news channels anymore. They are the regurgitators of biased garbage trying to either shame or giving rise to the name of a particular community or class of paper. That’s why, it’s now time to start your own newspaper. But that’s not going to be easy. You’d need to obtain the RNI registration for online newspaper portal.

Back when RNI registration was introduced, there is no such thing called the "internet". But now, as online publications have taken precedent over your traditional newspapers, you need get ready, and register your portal at the Registrar of newspaper in India.

In this article, you’ll know how to start an online news portal in India and the legal requirement that you need to get to start it.

Step 1: Choosing the correct title for the newspaper

As you’d be publishing the news online, you can find a unique name for your portal by doing a simple domain search. However, now that online newspapers have also come under RNI jurisdiction, you have to be very specific, very unique, and very acceptable about the name that you choose. Thus,

  1. First, go through the RNI guidelines regarding naming the news portal.

  2. Then, choose a unique name keeping those guidelines in mind.

  3. See if the trademark registration option is available for that newspaper portal.

Step 2: Getting approval to use the tile – RNI title Registration

Once you’ve decided what the name of your news portal will be, you have to get approval of the title from the Registrar of Newspapers in India. The process involved is as follows:

  1. File the online application for RNI title registration. Once you do, download the hard copy of the application after paying the requisite fee.

  2. Once you’ve paid the RNI Registration fee and have downloaded the hardcopy, sign it and submit to the office of DCP/JCP/CMM/SDM/DM/DC

  3. If the application is approved, get an RNI title verification letter.

Step 3: Get your first article or piece of news out

In this step of RNI registration, you’d need to go through the steps given below:1

  1. After receiving RNI title verification letter, file a declaration with the district magistrate.

  2. Get the declaration authenticated.

  3. Publish your first news article and forward it to the RNI department along with the authenticated declaration.

  4. Get the RNI certificate to start an online news portal.

Conclusion

It only takes three steps to start your own news portal. Decide a good name, get an approval for it, and then, get approval for the news articles. Once those are covered, you can publish news on your online portal when you see fit. As the RNI certificate process for news portal is fairly new, you’re not bound with the same restrictions.
