Are There Any Good PS2 Emulators?

The Playstation 2 has seen better days. It was Sony’s most popular console back in 2000. It was the time when both Nintendo and Dreamcast were racing to get ahead but couldn’t. Now you can play your favorite ps2 titles on a PS4 but people still choose PC over PS4. Why? Because PC is the master-race. That is the truth. A console can only fathom doing what a PC can achieve. So, people instead dump their BIOS to legally play their games on a PS2 emulator. But most of the emulators out there are ridden with issues. So are there any good emulators that will give you the PS2 experience?

PCSX2

Presenting you, hands down the best PS2 emulator. The PCSX2 emulator was developed by a team of brilliant people. When it first came out, there was no proper hardware to test its potential because most of the PCs couldn’t handle it. Now we have even more powerful PCs and the PCSX2 shines in all its glory.

This emulator completely imitates the PS2 system. It has got an edge over all other working emulators because it is the fastest and the most accurate. It works so well because of its ability to use a lot of plug-ins to facilitate the emulation.

For example, the GSDX plug-in runs for both DirectX 9, 10, and 11. The plug-in also features a lot of hacks that can result in even better picture quality. For example, the zero sprite option and alpha blending coupled with custom resolution can give out the sharpest picture on our current-gen HD monitors. It also allows you to use custom shaders like bloom, FXAA and many others to add more eye candy to it.

NeutrinoSX2

NeutrinoSX2 is also a PS2 emulator that works similarly to the PCSX2. It is available for the Windows platform. I won’t say it performs the same as PCSX2, but you can use it as an alternative if some games are having issues in PCSX2.

It can also play games at a high frame rate with a little bit of tinkering with the settings. The Tekken series plays great with this emulator. Just not as good as it does on the PCSX2. It also supports different plug-ins and also features a dev mode as well.

PS2Emu

Although it is available for Windows most PC users prefer using PCSX2. But the reason we included this emulator is that it is also supported on Linux. So if you have a Linux build and want to try it out, it is indeed a good choice. With newer hardware and the evolution of Linux, it has become more feasible for gaming in recent years. That is why it now runs even faster especially on AMD cards. But to run this emulator you are going to need a pretty beefy system.

The Bottom Line

There aren’t many PS2 emulators available. Among the very few available, only a few allow you to play any game at a playable framerate. We highly recommend using PCSX2 if you are a PC user and enjoy your games like you never did before. Just remember to legally dump your BIOS. If you don’t have an old display to make it work, just buy a PS2 to HDMI converter and you are good to go.
