An orthopaedic surgeon is an orthopedic medical professional who specialises in the treatment of injuries to bones, tendons and muscles that occur in the bones, joint, and spinal region of the body. These conditions can either be acute or chronic, with the former being the result of a single event, such as trauma, whereas the latter are caused by repeated trauma over time, such as when an injury to the spinal column occurs repeatedly. There are various different types of orthopaedics, including sports medicine and occupational therapy. A sports medicine consultant is an orthopedic specialist who provides diagnosis and advice relating to any sporting injuries or conditions. They may also provide specific training relating to sporting activities for patients, such as assessment and rehabilitation of injured muscles.

A Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Springwood may treat disorders of the spine, including low back pain, gestosis (tympanic lesions), craniofacial abnormalities, fractures, stress fractures, injured ligaments, injured vertebrae, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, and traumatic injuries to the knee. They may perform invasive procedures, which involve the use of laser equipment, scissors, scalpels, and other instruments. These may include arthroscopic knee surgery, orthopedic microsurgery, and surgical staples. They may use interventional techniques, which involve the use of lasers and surgical instruments to correct problems that cannot be corrected using the previously mentioned techniques. The most common surgeries utilised by these consultants are hip replacement, neck replacement, craniomaxillofacial surgery, shoulder replacement, and wrist surgery.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeons perform hip arthroscopy surgery to remove the dysfunctional hip joint. This is an arthroscopic surgical procedure that removes damaged or dysfunctional hip joint tissue and improves functions in the joint. These surgeons often make small incisions in patients' bodies, to take out the damaged tissues. Some surgeons use scalpels, while others rely on scalpels and titanium screws to complete the surgery. This surgery involves hip arthroscopy (cutting the hip joint) as well as hip replacement.

A consultant orthopaedic surgeon is also referred to as a consultant rheumatologist and is trained to treat patients with musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions include arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, hernia, impingement syndrome, myositis, sacroiliac joint disorder, and submucous fibromyalgia. These conditions are very painful and need immediate treatment. A patient will usually consult a consultant anaesthetist or surgeon on these conditions. A consultant rheumatologist can treat conditions such as whiplash, head trauma, blunt head injury, spinal cord injuries, herniated discs, and many more.

Head trauma can result from either a serious accident or trauma caused during the work process. The most common injuries caused by trauma include whiplash, contusions, and brain bleeds. A consultant can perform surgery to correct these types of traumas. If a brain bleed occurs, a consultant might have to open the skull in order for a neurosurgeon to access the brain and stop the bleeding. Whiplash can occur when the head is slammed forward rapidly during an accident. Consultant surgeons can perform surgeries that correct such problems.

Facet fractures, or facial fractures, occur when there is damage to the cheekbone or midface. When a cheekbone or midface fracture occurs, it can cause extreme pain and mental anguish. Consultant surgeons can perform facial fractures, which include fixing cheekbones that have been fractured, repairing cheek bones that are missing or grafting face muscles. Neck and back pain can also be caused by trauma or an accident. Consultant surgeons can diagnose and treat back and neck problems if they detect signs of injury.

Crompton has many consultants who can assist him in surgery on an array of conditions and can perform operations on an outpatient basis. Conditions such as maiming, amputations, spinal cord injuries, spinal stenosis, disfigurement, blindness, and other debilitating conditions can be treated by a consultant surgeon. An example of a procedure that a consultant surgeon might perform on a client is treating a patient's neck and upper back pain caused by a car accident. Another example would be treating a patient suffering from whiplash or neck pain caused by a bad fall.

In addition to working as an orthopaedic surgeon, a consultant surgeon can also perform reconstructive knee surgery. This type of surgery is used to take the damaged cartilage and replace it with a prosthetic knee that matches the patient's knee size and strength. Consultant surgeons are also trained to work on cleft palates and other facial abnormalities. This type of plastic surgery is especially helpful for children with facial deformation caused by birth trauma.
