If you find knocking noise from your car while driving over the bumps, then several components are responsible behind the causes of the noise. Before you bring your car to the mechanic make sure that you will aware of all the noises arise in the car from those hidden components which are not visible easily. The components which create hidden noises in your car are the struts and steering racks that create internal component noise in your car. Here the points define the causes behind the knocking noise in a car over the bumps.

Damaged sway bar links

The damaged sway bar links are commonly noticeable in most of the car because they are abused and unrigged. The bar links are the small rod type linkage which carries a nylon bushing ball sockets on each end by inserting steel ball into it. As it is built like a shoulder joint of our body that can carry the ball and socket joint on each end. By replacing the sway bar link and hardware of your car are very difficult because the area of the bar links is tight like one of the subframes.

Worn strut bushing

When you drive your car over the bumps and large cracks on the road, then the worn strut bushing can make clunking or thumping noises. If the leaks are external, then it is easy to notice. But if the seals ate blown internally, then you need to do bounce test of the car. In a bounce test, the car bounces up and down and release the bounce on its own. If your car is bouncing more than three times on its own, then replace the struts as early as possible. When you inspect the strut bushing of your car, if you are finding a lot of fluid and dirt collected on the strut indicated that you need to replace both pairs of the struts.

Steering rack noise

After a few days of uses, the steering rack of your car is worn out and cause knocking noise somewhere. While drive on the uneven road surfaces of the car, if you will hear knocking noise in your car then replace the steering rack end bushings of your car. To check the damaged steering rack of your car, first, you need to jack up the front of the car, support them under the frame with the jack stands. After the take the front tire and shake them side to side. In this way, if you feel any types of movements or knocking noise in the tire, then replace the steering racks off your car.

Failed sway bar bushing

If you thought that sway bar bushing is a part of the sway bar link, then you are absolutely wrong. The bushing of your car is located under the brackets and hold the sway bars to the body of the car. When the bar bushing wears out gradually, then it will cause knocking noise if your drive the car over bumps and small cracks in the pavement. The sway bar bushings are is very easy to replace because it is located on the top of the subframe or hidden away of your car. As it is also easy to take out and for removal, it only requires two bolts on each bracket.

Broken ball joints

Several ball joints are available in a car. Some of them are located in the front suspension of your car and other is located in the rear suspension. Thus, the ball joints of the car define the other ball and socket combinations which are covered with a nylon socket and steel ball. When the ball joint is malfunctioned, the lack of lubrication and potholes it will first wear out the nylon socket. Among the different types of ball joints, some of them are held by clips and bolted together. All of them allow the suspension to move and turn easily until one become worn and noisy.

Conclusion

The above points briefly define the causes behind the knocking noise in your car and all of the causes have their own set of issues and fixing solutions. If you notice any of the issues in your car, then without having any delay take your car to a reputed mechanic for inspecting your car for diagnosing the issues causing the knocking noise.
