Inspect your furniture for loose joints. For tables, chairs and other furniture with legs, turn the piece over and check the underside to inspect the joints more closely. Tighten all screws and replace any that are stripped with a slightly thicker, longer screw of the same type. Squeeze wood glue into open joints and tap nailed joints back together with a rubber mallet, to protect the finish. Add a clamp to squeeze joints closed, or hold them in place until the glue dries.

Most minor dings and chips can be repaired with fillers. Small dents can be raised with a damp cloth placed over the spot. Apply a hot clothes iron on top for a few seconds. For stained furniture, use solvent-based wood filler on chips and dings. They dry faster and harder than traditional water-based fillers and can even be used to build up edge details that have been worn down or damaged.

Choose the color closest to your stain color. Fill damage in painted furniture with auto body filler. Mix it a little "hot" by adding just a little extra activator, making it five parts putty to one part activator. Allow your fillers to harden completely, and then sand them smooth with a sanding machine or rotary tool with a sanding accessory.

This allows the color to be matched by the professional rather than bringing home sample chips and guessing. Always test the color on the bottom edge, the back of a drawer or some other inconspicuous spot to make sure of a match. Apply the stain or paint with an art brush in very thin layers. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next. Unless a color just completely clashes, let it sit a day or two before stripping and refinishing, to see if it really stands out.

Chances are, you will forget about it and over time it will blend better through wear. Once the repair is complete and the color is back to normal, the finish will still need to be restored to match the sheen of the original.
