Ecommerce is here to stay. That means that if you don't already have an ecommerce store, you're going to get one soon.

If, on the other hand, you already have one, you'll want to understand how you can use email marketing to grow your online business.

Email marketing provides one of the most low-cost channels of marketing. It's also relatively easy to start with and yet there's always one more thing to learn, no matter how successful you become.

Here are the 3 things you can do with your email marketing to grow your online store and get ahead of your competitors

1. Study email marketing from expertsTo begin with, make sure you subscribe to the emails of some of the leading ecommerce sites. Maybe you bought a few things from Amazon? or Wal-Mart's online store? or Barnes and Nobles? Or some ecommerce site from whatever country you're based in?

Dig out all their old emails. Their emails would fall into different categories, so the next step is to categorize those emails.

Mainly, you want to study the following two types of emails these huge companies send(A) Cart abandonment emails: When you click on a few product, submit the basic info and suddenly leave without making payment you've essentially abandoned your cart. Ecommerce companies always try to win back people like you and persuade them to complete the purchase. Pay attention to their wording. Check if they've offered any special discount.

(B) Post-purchase emails: After you purchase something fromt eh ecommerce store, you will still receive emails from them to chase you and ask you to buy more. That's a smart strategy actually, because existing customers are more likely to come back and make repeat purchase. Study these emails to learn how you can use those strategies.

2.Build and grow your listYou need to build your own list.

While many marketers will suggest you can use purchased lists, there isa larger number of marketers who recommend that you should not use purchased lists and instead use your own lists.

So how do you grow your list?

Start writing blogs. Upload posts and photos on Instagram or Facebook or wherever you think your customers hang out. Get noticed.

Next, invite them to sign up for your newsletter. Offer valuable content in your newsletter. Share tips on how to better use certain products. Or explain how to carry out maintenance of technical gadgets.

3. Understand the KPIsSurely you know it, but for the sake of clarity, I will mention that KPI stands for Key Performance Indicators.

Basically, they are features and factors that are most important to help you understand how effective your email marketing efforts are.

There are many terms you need to understand, but you can begin by these two:(A) Open rates: What is the proportion of people who open your emails for ever 100 emails you sent? If you sent out 200 emails and 48 people opened your email, your open rate is 24 (that's 48 times 200 divided by 100). This mainly shows how effective your email subject line is.(B) CTR: What is the proportion of people who clicked on the links you inserted in your email? It's calculated pretty much the same way as Open rate, except that the factor here is the number of people clicking a certain links.

Different email service providers (ESPs) like ActiveCampaign, E-goi, MailChimp, GetResponse and so on provide a number of email marketing services and they will share the above KPIs with you. Most also have a free model, so you can always check out a few before pay for a particular brand.

Once you have the basics in place, you can start looking at the details of email marketing. I will cover the details in my subsequent blogs.

Wish you great success in your email marketing efforts!
