Vienna ski season has started
Posted: Feb 02, 2021
The year is 31 days old and it couldn't have been more insane. Full of hope and ambition, Austria started with a lockdown in January 2021, which should lead to an early reduction in the corona numbers. However, the consequences quickly became apparent from an ambivalent side. Instead of falling infection numbers, an increase in second home registrations was recorded in Tyrol and Salzburg, and the size of the Upper Austrian average household has also grown to 25 people. After these first disappointments in the new year, many placed their hopes on the corona vaccination, which promised a quick end to the pandemic.
The first vaccine doses arrived in Austria at the beginning of January. Before the government could say "press conference", a priority list was drawn up detailing who can expect a vaccine and when. The first group includes mayors and their offspring. Group two are all those who have studied at least for a minimum period of time, have five years of work experience, speak seven languages, are able to work in a team and are not older than 21. The registrations for the vaccination quickly trickled in, but then the surprise: Where are the vaccination doses? Gernot Blümel made a mistake and only ordered 80,000 cans for his country. If that weren't bad enough, the EU would have found it had fallen for an online vaccine fraudster - the media would only have warned against it.
First Wiener Linien gondola in operation
While Austria and the EU are waiting for the long-awaited corona vaccinations, the semester break begins in Vienna. The capital has not only recently been considered a role model in dealing with corona infections and has now also thought of something special for the beginning holiday season that should clearly relieve the other federal states. With the use of NEOS in the city government, it has now become possible to bring ski tourism to Vienna. Wiener Linien has already put the first gondola into operation, which will immediately lead to the Kahlenberg. Further runs are to be created on the Sophienalpe and on the Rosenhügel.
At the celebratory opening of the Vienna ski season, the entire city government took the first gondola up the Kahlenberg and happily waved to the incoming tourists from all federal states: "Who says that Vienna cannot become the new Ischgl!"
