Hollow block

In general, hollow block walls are made of steel rods, cement, gravel, and other additional materials. For this reason, we are witnessing a strengthening of construction with precast concrete materials in Monterrey. In their design they have an empty area greater than 25%, they come in different shapes and sizes. They are masonry units used in construction all over the world and you can also find designs that are compatible with various types of precast panels that are used to obtain different finishes on the walls.

Among the main benefits they present for construction, the following stand out:

Quick execution of work. Made from molds that produce them in equal shapes, sizes and weight, it is easy to implement construction work, all it takes is to put them in the right place. The same shapes and sizes help to easily assemble them to form any particular design required in a construction job.

Highly durable. They are compacted by high pressure and vibration, which makes the blocks very strong, resistant to severe loads and weights.

Better insulation properties. The air in the shaft does not allow heat or cold to enter or leave the building. It's no wonder they are insulated against heat, moisture, and sound.

Environmentally friendly. It does not pollute nor does it have any known environmental nuisance to the system.

It helps to minimize the construction materials used which minimizes the cost of construction.

Low maintenance. Maintenance costs, compared to other available building materials, is significantly lower.

Conserve space. The construction of thin walls with hollow blocks is very common. Thus, it helps to reduce the space used in construction and increases the floor area.

Adhesion of mortar and plaster. Since its surfaces are rough, it provides a good bond between mortar and plaster.

Solid block

Solid blocks are used less and less, although they still represent a large part of construction in Mexico. This is because they are heavier, requiring better foundations and investing more in materials. Its main characteristics are that they are very strong and provide good stability to the structures, making them ideal in areas with tectonic movements or very extreme weather situations. Also, they are produced in larger sizes compared to bricks. Therefore, it takes less time to build any building.

Its main advantages are:

Waterproof. Permeability and porosity vary by unit type, but generally absorb water. A mixture of course and fine particulate material during manufacture produces a significantly more impermeable wall. The amount of cement used in manufacturing affects the permeability of the block; a mixture rich in cement produces a less permeable block, compared to a mixture of cement and fine sand, which uses waterproof compounds during manufacture.

Fire resistant. Flame retardant properties vary by coverage area and unit type. Although compared to any other building material, it significantly increases the fire resistance of buildings.

Aesthetic properties. Manufacturers of concrete block now produce a wide range of colors, textures and finishes that architects use to great effect, depending on the design of the building. Concrete block manufacturers are developing new shapes and sizes to meet a constantly evolving construction market.

Thermal insulating properties. Insulating properties vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and depend on density. Thermal conductivity tests performed by manufacturers determines the insulating properties. By reducing density by volume and producing lighter weight units, manufacturers increase thermal insulation properties.

Acoustic properties. Any structure depends on the way of construction, the joints and connections between the blocks and the properties of the materials used during manufacturing.
