Principles of Effective Energy Management
Posted: Feb 15, 2021
An energy management system will help organizations better manage their energy use, thus improving productivity. It involves developing and implementing an energy policy, setting achievable targets for energy use, and designing action plans to reach them and measure progress. This might include implementing new energy-efficient technologies, reducing energy waste, or improving current processes to cut energy costs.
Rising energy costs are the arising issue of all the managers. So achieving ISO 50001 Certification Energy Management System became a priority for facilities. Many new energy-saving technologies are available in the market to control or limit the use of energy not beyond the prescribed limits, such as automated management systems, but they do not guarantee a successful energy program in themselves. Facility managers should keep the following principles in mind as they consider "new" approaches to energy management by effective use of resources and reduction in the operation cost.
- Identifying and tracking Energy Pattern: The first step of any program is identifying and tracking the energy pattern in an organization. IF we do not have proper knowledge of how, when, and where energy is used, there is no way to gauge, estimate or identify the relative energy resource and the importance of energy management projects.
- Controlling the usage of Energy Pattern:To obtain more amount of energy saving, it is not important to install LED lights (Consume less energy), electronic ballasts or T-8 lamps, etc. Instead, we need to focus more on energy savings that may be obtained by simply controlling a system’s use.
- Adopting Systematic maintained facilities:A program with effectively maintained and managed facilities proved to be the most successful energy management programs facilities, that offer effectual Energy Management. The quantity of technological equipment plays the least role in the success of effective Energy management.
- Improve maintenance practice:To achieve more return in less energy usage or conversion, it is necessary to practice regular and good maintenance of the equipment or machines. Good energy management and maintenance go hand in hand. Some of the highest rates of return on energy conservation are generated simply by performing maintenance.

5. Preventive and Reactive Maintenance: Preventive maintenance is still critical and reactive maintenance. Despite the funding limitations, (waiting for a crisis to occur) is considered foolish. Preventive maintenance can be ignored when the systems are new, seals are tight, calibrations are precise, and heat-exchanger surfaces are clean. As systems age, preventive maintenance needs to be taken care of rather than reactive maintenance. 6. Difference between Energy Management and Maintenance:One should be aware of the difference between maintenance and energy management; as they serve different purposes. For example, cleaning light-fixture lenses or other equipment is a part of good maintenance and installing more lamping and equipment is good energy management. These distinctions must be remembered when budgets are being prepared for a program.
7. Use Automated Energy Management Systems: Automated energy management systems cannot be compensated when it comes to saving energy resources. New technologies are far much better in operation with less energy than the poor HVAC system design. If heating and cooling loads are incorrectly estimated or equipment is inappropriate, automation cannot wring more performance out of system components than they were designed to provide.
Thus, it is imperative to keep these basic principles of energy management in mind to create an effective energy management program. Furthermore, the global scenario is changing at a rapid phase, and demand for ISO 50001 Certification is increasing, for innovative as well as effective energy management solutions. So, organizations are hiring professionals to take care of their Energy Management System. These professionals have in-depth knowledge about Energy Management.
