Posted: Feb 28, 2021
PMP or the project management professional is a worldwide acclaimed certification which is administered by the PMI (Project Management Institute). It certifies you to become an acclaimed project manager, providing you the right set of skills and disciplines to manage projects in such a manner that you deliver it with a high success rate while paying attention to the limitations in terms of time and money. PMP is valid throughout the world, and you can work in any domain after getting this certification, PMP helps in telling the employer and the clients that you know what you are doing.
Apart from geography on its side, PMP has a lot of other advantages too. It gives us a worldwide connection, with more than a million PMP certified professionals worldwide, we get a chance to interact and connect with professionals of the same field, and learn from their experiences too. The PMP certified professionals get a better review in their performance and they get a better increment in their salaries. Also, PMP is future proof, as the demand for certified professionals to handle the projects is on an ever-increasing spree, as clients want their projects to be handled by professionals, who have years of hands-on experience in this domain.
So, one might think that all are eligible to do a PMP certification, or are you qualified enough to apply for a PMP course. The best thing about PMP certification is that anyone can do it. Well, not anyone, but yes, people with basic qualifications can also apply to become a certified PMP. So, PMP certification has three basic requirements that need to be fulfilled by the applying candidates. If a candidate fails to fulfil either of the three mentioned conditions, then PMI would not allow that candidate to appear for the test.
So, these conditions are: First, the years of Project Management Experience - This accounts for the duration of time (months) that you have worked on a project. If you have worked on more than one project simultaneously, then only one of those projects can be included in this term. The projects that you are mentioning should be completed in a professional environment only; Second, the hours spent leading and directing projects - We can include hours devoted simultaneously to multiple projects, this condition accounts for the cross functional projects where you worked under the constraints of time, cost, and scope.
Lastly, the third condition is the formal hours of education that you have put while learning the core concepts of project management, this helps in learning the thorough concepts of project management. It can occur in any form, be it a professional course, a training session, a workshop, any form that provides a certificate of completion towards the project. While applying for the PMP certification, one needs to be ready with the information regarding the formal education that he or she has done, in terms of name of course, name of the institution, the dates when the training happened, and the number of hours that one has accrued.
PMP certification is not just about the exam that you pass, it's more about the hands-on experience that you have had working on projects. So, if you have done a high school diploma or an associate's degree, then you need to have 35 hours of formal education, 60 months of project management experience in a professional environment, and 7500 hours of leading and directing projects. Whereas, if you have a bachelor's degree in any field, then you need 36 months of project management experience in a professional environment, 4500 hours leading and directing projects, duration for the formal education remains the same at 35 hours.
Hence, one can see that it doesn't matter from what field you belong, or in what domain you have worked, what matters is that you have had formal education, you have worked on real life projects in a professional environment, and personal projects like managing a house party doesn't count! Since, PMP is a global certification, so the rules that apply to it are uniform throughout, you could have done a bachelor's degree from Europe, and then moved to the USA, and there you could have started doing PMP certification, but your education and experience of the past would still be valid.
Also, PMP certification is not related to a particular sector, you could have been working in a global MNC, or could have been managing your own business, or you could have been working with government on some project of theirs, any experience in project management in any domain of work is treated equal in terms of the hours spent by an individual. Therefore, your stream of work won't hinder you from becoming a certified PMP professional, as the demand for PMP certification is across all sectors in all the domains in equal quantity.
