The Proper Method To Take Your Blood Pressure

Did you just see a few of your favorite blood pressure monitors for sale that just made you want to purchase one right away? Or have you been looking for a blood pressure monitor with extra large cuffs? If you are going to buy one in the near future and aren't sure of how to use one rightly, here's how you can do so using the proper method.

This piece of equipment shows two numbers which show the blood pressure reading. The number on top is termed the systolic BP, and the number on the bottom is called the diastolic BP. Together they contribute to the blood pressure readings. Normal blood pressure is considered to be one that is 130/90 or lesser. However, too low is also bad for the body.

On the other hand, if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you are at a greater risk of going through a heart attack or stroke. You may also be prescribed some blood pressure medications and advised to control your diet, exercise, and asked to monitor your blood pressure at home.

You can easily measure your blood pressure levels at home on a daily basis and keep a tight monitor on the pressure using a home blood pressure monitor. However, in order to get an accurate reading, following these steps can help tremendously. The right reading is key to the right medication management.

Here are the steps you should follow:
  • Firstly, ensure that the clothing you wear is loose-fitting such as a short-sleeved shirt. Then seat yourselves in a quiet corner of the room, with a desk or a table needed to take the reading.

  • Prior to taking the reading, ensure that you are seated at rest for at least five minutes, and then extend your arm and place it on a supported platform such as the table with it being placed at the same level as your heart. Also, make sure to rest your feet flat on the floor.

  • Ensure that you will not take your blood pressure anytime within the thirty-minute perimeter of drinking coffee, smoking, or exercising, as these activities tend to elevate blood pressure levels temporarily.

  • Make sure that you aren't taking your blood pressure levels on an injured arm, as it may give you a slightly varied reading.

  • Position the cuff of your blood pressure monitor with an extra-large cuff around one inch above the elbow of your arm. Wrap it around snugly, and make sure that it's not loose. A loose-fitting cuff will give you an inaccurate measurement.

  • Switch on the home blood pressure monitor and follow the instructions on the blood pressure digital machine's instruction menu. It will inflate the cuff and make you feel tight at first, but soon relax.

  • Note down the readings on the machine, both the systolic and diastolic. Take it a few days, and you'll know the average readings you'll get on the regular. If you see any irregularities in the readings, then don't stress; instead, head to the doctors and get yourself checked there to confirm the readings.
