Dr. Rohit Varma completed his fellowship training at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he received NIH support for his research on the epidemiology of eye diseases in vulnerable populations. He also completed a World Health Organization fellowship in India to study pediatric eye disorders, and an NIH-supported postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Varma is an internationally recognized researcher, educator, and innovator in the field of glaucoma and intraocular pressure (IOP) technology. He has made outstanding contributions to the scientific literature across the areas of epidemiology, technology development, and ocular hypertension and glaucoma pathophysiology.

Dr. Varma's expertise in these fields is particularly relevant as his work relates to understanding how disease affects different populations. Rohit Varma is a surgeon, scientist and inventor who has focused his research on the mechanisms of visual perception. He was awarded his M.P.H degree by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 1989. He served as an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1987 to 1989, then as an instructor at the Center for Neuroscience and Visual Science at the University of Rochester School of Medicine from 2008 to present. Rohit Varma, M.D., an internationally recognized authority on the pathogenesis and treatment of macular degeneration, has been a major force in expanding the understanding of this disease and developing new therapies for it.

The Foundational work in this field led to clinical trials that test target therapies, such as anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy, for the first time in patients who have the "wet" form of age-related macular degeneration. His research has broadened our understanding of the molecular basis of macular degeneration. He continues to investigate how eye tissues are affected. For more than 40 years, Rohit R. Varma, MD, MPH, has been a pioneer and leader in the fields of glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology.

Mr. Varma is accomplishments include the development of several new glaucoma medications that now form the basis for standard therapy, identification of clinical subtypes of glaucoma which are treated by different types of medications, and numerous contributions to the development of techniques for treating glaucoma and other eye disorders. After a decade at Keck School of Medicine of USC, Rohit Varma has resigned his position in order to take on the role of chief business officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment's Institute for Creative Technologies. A board-certified glaucoma sub-specialist, Rohit Varma, M.D, M.P.H, is a clinical professor at the USC Keck School of Medicine. He also is co-director of the Glaucoma Consult Service at the USC Eye Institute and is on faculty at the Keck Medical Center of USC, University of California - San Francisco and the University of Chicago.
