WHAT IS XDRIVE

BMW xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system. That translates to a savvy system that can adapt on the fly to help prevent wheel slips on a variety of road conditions. The result is a luxury vehicle which intuitively distributes power to maximize traction under even the most challenging conditions.

HOW BMW XDRIVE WORKS AND BUILDS ON BMW PERFORMANCE ABILITY

Unlike other all-wheel drive systems, BMW xDrive is electronically controlled. What does that mean?

The standard split on BMWs with xDrive is 40/60 percent ratio (front wheel drive/rear wheel drive). When the movement of muscle is needed to maintain traction, xDrive technology automatically adapts on the fly to promote the ideal drive in less-than-ideal conditions. To do so, it lends support to front and rear axles as needed. If a slip in traction occurs, xDrive delivers extra power to the wheels with sturdy traction. And, it all occurs instantly.

BMW XDRIVE NOW FEATURED ON MANY MODELS

BMW xDrive is featured on a number of BMW models including the X1, X2, X3, X3 M, X4, X5,X6, and X7. BMW xDrive can also be found in several of BMW’s other popular models like the 3 Series and 5 Series.

If the ultimate driving power and performance better align with your desire, BMW also offers xDrive on such models as the BMW X5 M and x6 M. BMW’S HISTORY WITH ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The xDrive system is not BMW’s first attempt at all-wheel drive. In fact, it has quite a history of producing luxury vehicles that move power to the rear and front wheels.

The first BMW xDrive models were released in 2003. Prior to the introduction of xDrive, all-wheel drive was available on several models from 1986 to 1996 and again beginning in 2001.

Do you need xDrive?

We’ve all contemplated purchasing a car with four-wheel drive once we see a light flurry of snow and when our roads start to look like rivers after heavy rain. With four-wheel drive, you needn’t worry as much about losing grip on slippery surfaces like this or even on tricky off-road terrain but like any 4x4 system, xDrive isn’t a magic bullet and can’t create grip where there’s none to be had. You still need to proceed with caution.

If you want a BMW that can do some serious off-roading, the ‘X-series’ of SUVs such as the X5 and X7 are impressively capable. Then, on the road, xDrive BMWs offer a greater sense of security than their two-wheel drive counterparts, from the 1 Series hatchback right up to the 7 Series luxury saloon.
