Schizophrenia is a very disturbing and debilitating disease and it can ruin a person’s life if not treated properly. A person suffering from this disease usually suffers from hallucinations, delusions, anxiety, depression, etc. A combination of medication for schizophrenia is used to combat these symptoms. Both classic and new medication is used to treat the symptoms of this ailment. The main medication in this ailment is that of anti psychotic drugs and both classic and new medicines are used. The classic ones include Triflouperazine, Chlorpromazine, haloperidol, and thioridazine, while the newer ones are risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone and aripiprazole. All emotional and behavioral disorders can be treated with the help of medication in this ailment.

The older medicines had severe side effects like heart palpitations, constipation, urinary retention, dry mouth, dizziness, sexual problems, muscle twitches and tics. Due to these side effects the newer medications are more preferred, but they too have side effects like diabetes, weight gain and heart disease predisposition. Anti psychotic medication can be administered orally as well as in the form of injections. Anti anxiety medication is also often used in this ailment as one of the major symptoms of a person suffering from schizophrenia is anxiety. Depression is also one of the less common problems and in this case anti depressant medication can also be used.

However, all these medicines have side effects and hence should only be used with the guidance of a qualified psychiatrist. However, some times the medication may not be sufficient and an additional treatment method of counseling, group therapy, family therapy etc may have to be used. Whatever be the case, you should discuss your symptoms with a qualified psychiatrist and only then follow the method of treatment prescribed by him or her. This is because medication for schizophrenia is very strong and potent and if taken without proper guidance can cause more harm than good.

At the same time, only a qualified psychiatrist will be able to decide the right medication and the right dosage in order to deal with all the emotional and behavioral disorders that occur with the ailment of schizophrenia. With proper medication and other treatment a person can live an almost normal life and follow the tasks of daily routine quite easily. In spite of the usual success of the combination of medication and counseling, sometimes the symptoms of this ailment may not come under control. However, proper treatment is a must because a person suffering from this ailment can often become violent and cause harm to the self or others.
