Tinnitus, also known as ringing in ears is the feeling of ringing or swishing sound in the ears accompanied by a perceived increase in pitch or intensity. A very common problem, tinnitus usually affects more than 15 percent of the population. Tinnitus is not a disease itself but merely a symptom of an underlying medical condition, including hearing impairment, age-related hearing disorder or an undiagnosed circulatory disorder. Most cases of tinnitus are not life-threatening but can be debilitating and in some cases may actually require treatment.

Some of the most common causes of tinnitus include high blood pressure, excessive wax build-up in the ear, or acoustic neuroma, a rare form of tumors that results from loud noise exposure. Tinnitus symptoms are not limited to hearing difficulties but can include balance, appetite, depression, insomnia, nausea, stress and anxiety. In addition, patients with tinnitus also experience auras or increased feelings of energy. The Ayurvedic treatment of tinnitus is aimed at treating the underlying cause, reducing the perceived sound and treating the psychological or physical stress that contributed to its development. Several measures are recommended for this purpose, including:

  • Maintaining a regular sleep-wake schedule and avoiding stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine. - Avoiding loud noises or substances such as sawdust, rock concert music or industrial sounds. - Limiting the use of headphones or earphones if possible.
  • Avoidance of alcohol and caffeinated beverages, and avoidance of stimulating activities such as playing electronic musical instrument, listening to loud music on personal stereos or using headphones. - Avoiding loud noises such as aircraft engines, gun fire and crackle of fire. - Avoiding allergens such as dust mites, cockroaches, mould, pollen, dirt and excessive animal or human contact.

Sometimes, patients with tinnitus experience symptoms due to a severe ear infection or other underlying causes. When the inner ear is damaged by an ear infection or other circumstances, tinnitus can result. Ear infections are classified into acute and chronic. Acute ear infection results in a ringing or buzzing sound in only one ear or both ears, whereas chronic infection results in continuous ringing or buzzing sounds in both ears.

Tinnitus can be an indication of a more serious underlying disease or condition. For example, tinnitus that persists for more than six months is often associated with perforated ear drums, brain tumors or glomus tumors. Perforated ear drums can be caused by foreign bodies entering the ear, while brain tumors are often caused by high fevers or exposure to loud noises. Glomus tumors are often caused by fluid buildup inside the ear, while the above mentioned conditions are more often associated with exposure to loud noises.

Tinnitus is not a life-threatening ailment. It is often associated with other medical conditions and it's wise to see your doctor if you experience severe cases of tinnitus. In many cases, tinnitus can be successfully treated with prescription medication. Some of the best-known drugs for tinnitus are Carafate, Galaxyl, Pulsatilla, Benadryl and Zantac. There are many alternative treatments that can also help alleviate tinnitus such as acupuncture, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, homeopathic medicines and counseling.

If you suffer from tinnitus, the best remedy is prevention. Excessive salt intake can cause fluid retention, which in turn may cause the veins to become inflated causing an infection. Excessive sodium can cause hypertension and high blood pressure and in severe cases, a patient may have to undergo a surgical procedure to correct this condition. So the next time you have a gout-like headache, do take a closer look at your diet.

In addition to your diet, a poor diet can aggravate tinnitus or worsen it. Salt, sugar and fat should be eliminated from your diet. While it's true that you need to eat a healthy diet to keep your health in good shape, cutting out fat and salt won't necessarily solve your problem. If your problem is more severe, you may have to eliminate food from your diet altogether. You may have to reduce the amount of sodium in your diet as well.

Another possible contributing factor to your tinnitus could be a tumor. The tremendous pressure on the inner ear due to tumors can lead to hearing loss. The sound that you hear may become so loud that it wears down the delicate hairs in your ear causing your tinnitus. The underlying cause of the tumor needs to be diagnosed by a doctor to prevent further damage to the inner ear.

In most cases, there are no known causes tinnitus. In order to find relief, you'll need to determine what the common cause of tinnitus is. For most cases, it is exposure to loud noises. The excessive ear wax that develops in people who are exposed to extremely loud sounds can also lead to tinnitus. If you're suffering from either of these conditions, it's time to start controlling your exposure to loud sounds and work on a healthy diet. Once you've done that, you should notice a big difference in your tinnitus.
