A rotavator also known as rotary tiller, rototiller, power tiller, rotary hoe or rotary plough is a power-driven cultivator that prepares the soil for farming by using its rotating blades or tines. A rotovator is a quite popular garden or farm tool that loosens the soil prior to planting seeds and keeps pathways alongside and non-planted soil aerated throughout the growing season.

Rotavators are either self propelled or pulled behind either a two-wheel or four-wheel tractor as an attachment to the tractor. These are efficient farm equipment to control weeds and crush the clods in the soil with ease.

Generally self-propelled small rotary tillers are used to work in domestic home gardens. While other such as large and heavy-duty rotavators or roto tillers are used on farms attached to the tractor. Additionally these are also used to clean the external side of oilfield pipes and to prepare the land for constructing roads.

A rotavator can be firmly attached to a two-wheel tractor and powered via couplings to the transmission of the tractors. Rotavators with higher horsepower are generally used in farming especially in Africa, Asia and South America etc and are capable of preparing approximately 1 hectare land in 8 to 10 hours. These are also known as power tillers or two-wheel tractors.

Initially the tillers were only used for rice fields fixed with steel cage-wheels for traction. Nowadays, however, the same are used in both dryland and wetland farming in all over the world. These compact and large agricultural rotary tillers are not just powerful agricultural machinerybut also inexpensive and also work as alternatives to four-wheel tractors for small and large farm fields. They are also more economical than the some of the tractors.

A rotary tiller can be attached to a four-wheel tractor and driven by a tractor PTO shaft. It can be used in both secondary tillage as well as primary tillage equipment. It can also be conveniently used o farms in rows of vines and similar works.

Safety and maintenance

A rotavator should be operated very carefully and maintained properly. Any contact with the rotating blades can cause serious injuries. Bystanders, particularly children, need to maintain a safe distance from the machine on a farm. Tree branches, rocks or large roots need to be cleared out of the way before using it as if in case tines catch on such objects can cause the tiller to run out of control.

Also the filter and engine oil should be changed regularly. The suggested time for oil changes is minimum after 50 hours of use or once a year, or more often when the oil seems dirty. Additionally, the air filter should be cleaned or replaced regularly. The tines and housing need to be washed after use every time.

A farmer needs to follow all the instructions given on user manual by manufacturer about fuel storage, managing and storage for safe use.

For maximizing the lifespan the rotavator, store it in a covered shed or garage area when not in use to keep it safe.
