The researchers took samples from 3000 people and individual biological aging indicators were created using computer modeling and five measurements that were typically and widely used: the length of telomeres, DNA, gene levels, metabolites, and proteomics. These same indicators were then related to a variety of variables, including sex, lifestyle, and established physical and mental conditions, which included depression.

They found that a considerable number of overlapping as well as distinct associations between specific aging indicators and specific lifestyle factors or diseases. Being male, having a body mass index (BMI) that is above the recommended and healthy limit, smoking, and having metabolic syndrome, on the other hand, were all consistently linked to more advanced biological aging.

A high BMI is indicative of obesity. Apart from the aforementioned impact in aging, being obese also increases the risks of several health risks.
