University of Phoenix Reviews: Dawn Wilson -- "My degree helped me realize my lifelong dream"

Dawn Wilson was a single mom and full-time investigator when she started her degree journey at University of Phoenix. Wilson had wanted to work in law enforcement since she was 11 years old, and her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice helped to make that happen.

Dawn opted for online classes so she could attend from home and fit them around her busy work and family schedule. She was skeptical at first and worried about whether she would have the motivation and discipline to keep up without sitting down in a scheduled in-person class. Her worry was unnecessary, explains Wilson. Her academic counselor made sure that she stayed on task by checking in with her regularly, reminding her of upcoming classes and making sure that she had all the support and materials she needed to succeed.

She chose nursing as a career at a young age after nurses helped her deal with her fear when her father was going through cancer treatment. Seeing her father in a hospital bed surrounded by equipment was a scary thing, but the nurses took the time to explain it to her and knelt down to her level to make her feel included and less fearful. Today, Muir is a nursing supervisor in the hematology and oncology department at a major U.S. hospital. and his treatments left him hospitalized with lots of machines attached. It was a scary time for a young girl, but the nurses took the time to explain what was happening and talk to her at her level. They did a lot to help her to not be so afraid. Muir wanted to be able to do that for other families when she grew up.

Wilson particularly liked that all of her instructors had real-life experience in law enforcement. She says their stories added an extra dimension to the assigned classroom reading and made it much easier to relate to material to her job. but the nurses took the time to explain what was happening and talk to her at her level. They did a lot to help her to not be so afraid. Muir wanted to be able to do that for other families when she grew up.

When asked what advice she would give to prospective students considering enrolling in a degree program at University of Phoenix, Wilson quickly replied that "it's never too late. Go back to school and take that opportunity. What matters is that you do it."
