What is a Calibration Pump?

Calibration Pumps are used to test and calibrate pressure instruments such as pressure transmitters, gauges, and switches in laboratories, factories, or processing plants. Calibration is necessary to determine the accuracy and ensure the reliability of the instrumentation devices. These pumps are used to minimize the cost and simplify the process of calibration. It is recommendable to use a calibration pump as it has a pressure gauge as a reference.

There are two types of hand pumps for calibration

(i) Hydraulic Hand Pump

(ii) Pneumatic Hand Pump

Hydraulic Hand Pumps

Hydraulic hand pumps convert applied mechanical energy to hydraulic energy and deliver hydraulic fluid under pressure. The principle behind the working of these pumps is handle provides leverage to the internal piston. The piston forces hydraulic fluid into the cylindrical port. The most common fluids used are water and hydraulic oil. The generated hydraulic energy supplies pressure to test, adjust and calibrate different types of measuring instruments.

This process is different from pneumatic hand pumps; rather than using an incompressible fluid, these hand pumps use air, a very compressible gas.

Types of Hydraulic Pumps

There are two types of Hydraulic Pumps:

(i) Single-acting Hand Pumps (HPMU)

(ii) Double acting Hand Pumps (HPMR)

HPMU exerts force during downstroke only, but HPMR exerts force during up and downstroke. For the quick process, HPMR is the best option. But due to its high repair and maintenance cost, most people don’t prefer HPMR. HPMU is very simple to operate and much simpler in construction, But it requires twice the effort than HPMR.

Where to use Hydraulic Hand Pumps?

These pumps are helpful where there is a need for a high level of pressure (10000 psi or 70MPa). Hydraulic pumps can calibrate pressure transmitters and pressure gauges and in switch testing and leak testing. In some testing situations where there is no electricity availability and compressible gas, hand-held hydraulic pumps are helpful. Gas and oil industries where electrical equipment is a costly affair use these pumps.

Reasons to use Hydraulic Pumps

(i) Efficiency: The transfer of energy takes place very efficiently. A little effort, one or two squeezes, gets multiplied and enables to attain high pressure. As air is easily compressible, it requires much effort to create an equivalent pressure using pneumatic pumps.

(ii) Precision: Hydraulic pumps are effective when there is a requirement for a high degree of fine-tuning. They are with knobs, enabling the user to adjust the pressure conditions to minimal changes like 0.01psi or 0.69 KPa.

(iii) Stability: They are manufactured using machined metal or casting. This process minimizes the maintenance cost, reduces leaks, and ensures pressure and temperature stability.
