Acyclovir pills are prescription drugs administered to mitigate the symptoms induced by herpes, shingles, and chickenpox. Even though acyclovir pills cannot cure the ailment, they effectively reduce the symptoms of the viral infection.

How do you take acyclovir pills?

Acyclovir pills (also known as aciclovir pills) are available in the form of capsules and tablets. Acyclovir may also be used in the form of oral suspension or creams, and ointments topically applied on the affected areas to alleviate the sores and minimize the aggravation of the infection, such as

  • Shingles
  • Chickenpox
  • Genital herpes
  • Cold sores.

What conditions are treated using acyclovir pills?

Varicella-zoster, the causal agent of viral infections like chickenpox and shingles, takes effect on the patient by causing moderate to severe outbreaks of red blisters. In children and young adults, varicella-zoster causes chickenpox; the symptoms are mild to moderate and usually go away without taking any medication after a course. Although most people develop an immunity to the virus after being infected, sometimes the virus persists in the body and causes a recurrence of the infection in adults; this is known as shingles. Both chickenpox and shingles are highly contagious because of the virus being an airborne agent. A person who has not been vaccinated against chickenpox or hasn’t contracted chickenpox before is highly susceptible to contracting chickenpox from a person suffering from either chickenpox or shingles. Acyclovir pills are antiviral medications prescribed to ebb the exacerbation of the varicella-zoster infection and give the best result when administered at the onset of the rash.

Herpes virus is the causal agent of viral infections like cold sores, shingles, and genital herpes. They are caused by viruses belonging to the same family, viz—herpes simplex 1 and 2. Herpes zoster (herpes simplex 1) which results in the recurrence of aggressive chickenpox symptoms like painful sores, blisters, and fever, is usually treated with acyclovir pills to reduce the symptoms and minimize further spread of the infection on the patient.

Acyclovir pills are also used to treat the symptoms of genital herpes. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease found in adults characterized by mild to moderate red blisters in the genital area. If untreated, the blisters tend to burst and become painful ulcers. In addition, they are highly contagious amongst sexual partners. Acyclovir pills help relieve the symptoms of genital herpes while concomitantly lowering the transmission of the infection between partners. Genital herpes typically lasts for weeks, and patients are generally advised not to engage in intercourse to prevent the transmission of the infection.

Acyclovir is generally safe to use; however,

  • Patients with kidney troubles
  • Lactating mothers
  • Those taking other supplements or medication
