In general, running the engine rough is a common problem found in vehicles like BMW X1 on the road. Moreover, determining the real causes behind the problem can be difficult and time-consuming.

One can easily determine the rough idling issues in their vehicle through the identifiable shaking and bouncing sensation. On the other hand, it can be also determined through unusual sounds produced from the car and the inconsistent RPM counts of the engine.

However, the speed of the engine can be determined through the revolutions per minute of the engine’s crankshaft. When your car engine is running rough, it shouldn’t sound and feel smooth. As a result, it skips or slips while driving on the road. The following points define the causes behind the engine is running rough in BMW X1.

Failed oxygen sensors

Thus, the oxygen sensor of the BMW is designed for monitoring the number of unburned oxygen exits in the engine. These sensors are determining the amount of fuel needed to be released into the engine. However, it can maintain the emissions of the engine in your BMW.

When the oxygen sensor of the vehicle is failed, then the engine is running rough. So, when it happens, remove the sensor with a wrench and soak it overnight in gasoline. After cleaning the oxygen sensors, you should turn on the car. If the problem is continuous, then the check engine light is on and needs a mechanic to fix the issues.

Vacuum leaks

To create a vacuum for both the fuel and air, most BMW models have a maze of hoses. Thus, the engine has a carburetor and the vacuum pulls the fuel into the engine. Moreover, most of the new cars have the throttle for regulating the engine speed and airflow through the system.

Throughout the process, the hoses are creating a vacuum within the intake manifold. But, over time these hoses wear out and develop a leak. If too much amount of air is mixed with the fuel, then it will cause engine misfiring in BMW X1. As a result, the engine is running rough at a higher RPM.

Clogged fuel pump

However, the fuel pump in your BMW is transporting the fuel from the gas tank to the fuel injectors. When the fuel pump is clogged, then the engine unable to get enough fuel to run and may stall out as well as slow to accelerate. It will be clogged when it captures the outside contaminates and cause the car to run rough.

Due to these reasons, you have to clean the fuel pump and found any damages for replacing it by a mechanic. For cleaning the fuel pump, you have to remove them from the car. In this process, you first need to disconnect the battery and relieve the pressure in the pump. After that, you have to locate the fuse in the fuel pump and clean it.

Failed spark plugs

In few models of the BMW, the failed spark plugs or spark plug wires are making the engine run rough. Generally, the spark plugs of the vehicle are using the electrical current which is received from the ignition coil for igniting the air into the fuel mixture within the combustion chamber.

When the spark plug of the BMW X1 is failed or is installed improperly, then it will burn more fuel at an inconsistent rate. In these conditions, you will notice that the engine running rough while driving and jerks or stutters under a load.

Damaged electrical parts

If the ignition or any of the electrical components of your BMW is damaged, then the engine is running rough. Thus, the problem is getting worse with the increased speed of the rotations per minute. So, when it happens, it’s better to check the electrical parts for determining any damages.

Among the several parts of the BMW, the ignition control module are most likely to cause rough engine running because these modules are controlling the fuel mixture and ignition timing as well as monitor the emissions produced from the exhaust system.

Conclusion

In general, the BMW X1 engine is running roughly due to many other reasons apart from the above-defined points. So, if you are living in Rochester and found rough engine issues, then you have to consult with a reputed mechanic for fixing the issues as soon as possible.
