Below are six tips and tricks for every homeowner to consider when caring for their roof. These tips and tricks are for roof maintenance and will help you out in the long run.

Clean Gutters

Gutters are made to collect rainwater from the roof and carry it away from the foundation of your home through downspouts/drains. Leak No More suggests cleaning your gutters so that you can prevent any damage done to your roof. Cleaning your gutters can also help with the foundation of your home and save you thousands in possible roofing repair costs. If you do not clean your gutters the water overflow from the gutters can fall along the foundation of the home. This can soften the soil under your roof and create cracks.

How do you know when to clean your gutters? If there are animals or pests present this is a high chance there is clogged gutter. If there is water flowing, this is another sign your gutters could be clogged.

Trim Back Tree Branches

Trees with long branches can cause potential roof damage or overall damage to your home. Any branch that is hanging over your roof should be trimmed back. Leak No More believes trimming your tree branches will help avoid any potential damage through falling branches, disease, or other issues. The homeowner is encouraged to trim any branches between late fall and early spring. Tree branches should be at least six feet from the roof.

Use a Roof Broom to Sweep

Using a roof broom will help prevent water buildup since things like pine needles and tree limbs can fall onto your roof. Use a push broom to sweep debris off the roof and use caution. Avoid using a broom with hard bristles or teeth because it may remove an excessive amount of asphalt from your shingled roof. Cleaning your roof should be a yearly project that is done to help prevent your roof from needing replaced/repaired.

Clear Downspout / Drains

Clearing your downspout should be completed at least twice a year. Leak No More can help clear any clogged downspout/drain. Depending on the area you live you may experience more fall foliage than someone else and may need to clean more often.

Keep an Eye Out for Moss / Algae

No matter what style of roof you have (tiles, shingles, metal, cedar shakes) moss on your roof is not good. As the moss grows it can push underneath the shingles, tiles etc and push them up and create damage to your roof. Moss untreated can also lead to leaks. The damage to a homeowners roof caused by moss growth can lead to holes, leaks, and thin spots.

Inspect Shingles

Leak No More suggests that your roof shingles should be inspected at least two times a year. You can hire a professional to check on your roof to see if there is anything of notice or concern. The best times to inspect shingles on roofs is during the fall and spring. Winter there is too many factors to consider such as snow fall, and ice.

These six maintenance tips and tricks will help prevent high cost roofing repairs/replacements.
