Horse rugs or blankets are used to keep horse safe and comfortable. When it comes to choosing the right blanket for your horse for the winter months, it is necessary to choose something that will keep your horse warm. However, there are also other factors to consider when purchasing a good blanket. Take a look the types of blankets given below to see their uses and what will suit your horse the best.

Filling

The filling of a blanket means the filling laid out for every square metre of the blanket. A higher number of filling means there is a better chance of the rug retaining and trapping heat. These blankets with higher filling provide more warmth to the horse. When it comes to choosing the rig with the right amount of filling, you need to consider a few factors such as the habits and the environment of the horse. This will help you decide whether you want to buy a blanket that provides more warmth or less warmth to your horse.

Denier

Denier is the measurement of the thickness of the blanket. This is measured by the fibre thickness of individual threads used in the manufacturing of the blanket. Ones with a higher denier are thicker and have a higher durability. Ones with a lower denier are softer, silky and tend to be sheerer. When it comes to colder months most horse owners opt for thicker types as they provide more protection from harsh weather conditions.

Usage

The type of blankets you use to cover your horse when inside is different than those used outside. Does your horse prefer to stay indoors in winter? If so, you will need to purchase a stable blanket. Often they do not come with waterproof features. However, if your horse tends to stay outside, then you need to look for a sheet that is better suited for the weather outside. A winter turnout sheet is the most suitable type for cold weathers. They are waterproof and can protect your horse in harsh, low temperatures.

Synthetic Rugs and Under Rugs

These are one of the popular types that are being used today. They can be used without under rugs and other layers. Synthetic sheets are also known to be light. However, if you do not prefer synthetic sheets, you can opt for a standard horse blanket. You can use woollen horse rugs as under rugs if you want to provide extra warmth or feel like your horse blanket needs more lining.

Combos or Not

These are the perfect choice if your horse requires some additional protection or warmth. Combos come with a neck rug as well which gives your horse a fully covered protective layer. There are also sheets that come with a detachable neck rug that you can attach only when you need it. When you don’t want a neck rug, you can simply remove it and use it as a regular horse blanket.

While there are blankets that are made specifically to provide warmth in cold weather, it is up to you to decide how much warmth your horse needs to be provided. In order to do this, you also need to be aware of the weather conditions of the environment your horse lives in, its habits as well as preferences. So make sure to pay attention to not just the features of the blankets but also the needs of your horse before you purchase.
