Social Work CEU Online: The Basics
Posted: Sep 30, 2014
Social work is the academic and professional area of study which is aiming to improve the quality of life and the well being of the people and groups that it looks to serve. This involves a huge number of things including teaching, community organization, and other things such as crisis intervention, research, and modification of political and governmental policy on the matter. This is for the benefit of people who have civil rights issues, people who are physically or mentally disabled, people who are suffering from social justice, or people who are at a social disadvantage in life.
People who work in this type of area are known as social workers. In the United Kingdom, this is a special designation which can only be given to people who have been through a training program at a college or a university and know a specific set of skills and who have been approved by the appropriate government regulations. This is not true in the United States, where many people claim the title of social worker and most of them do not have the rigorous qualifications that are held by those in most other countries.
Continuing education is one of the most important aspects of doing social work. Much like the landscape in politics is always changing, the landscape of social work is always changing as well. As new programs and new laws come into effect, the work that social workers have to do changes as well. Any new social program will mean changes to the existing ones. It will mean that people will be eligible for things that they may not have been able to get into before. It also means that the job of the social worker has become more complicated.
The main benefit to continuing social work education online is the fact that it can be done from anywhere. This means that if you need to you will be able to do it while you are on the job. It means that you do not have to rework your already filled schedule with classes at a real university because those classes are something you can do at your own leisure online. Besides that, most of them are simply going to be a slight modification of information that you already know or that you already have at your disposal. This is an important point to keep in mind. Check Google and check with your supervisory staff for information about continuing education in this way. If you find something you may want to make sure that it clears the regulations that you already have in place at your own workplace before you get too deep into study. This is simply because it is likely that it might not apply to what you are studying or what you need to know to complete your job in the best way possible. With that being said, it is always worth a look. Check local universities and unions for online resources as well.
