While many of you may be familiar with laser dentistry, for some it may be a new concept, laser dental care is using lasers for various dental procedures. If you are afraid of traditional drilling and sharp dental tools that come with it? Then Laser treatment might be the one for you. We are one such dental clinic in Medavakkam that offers laser dental treatments.

The common question might be, what issues can be treated using laser dental treatment, let’s have a look,

Tooth decay

Gum disease

Biopsy or lesion removal

Hypersensitivity

Teeth whitening

The use of lasers in dental treatments are more efficient, and aids in a cleaner procedure.

Laser dentistry methods can be used for two different producers called hard tissue procedures and soft tissue procedures. Hard tissue procedures focus on teeth and soft tissue procedures focus on gums.

Common hard tissue procedures

Detection of cavities.

Dental cavities are usually caused by bacteria that starts to corrode the tooth, which might result in tooth damage and losing it. Cavities can be detected early with lasers by looking for signs of tooth decay, through which tooth can be preserved. And also lasers kill bacteria in the cavities thus the tooth is preserved from damage.

Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is caused by exposed roots where any hot or cold object comes in contact with tooth leads to sensitivity. It is considered as a not so comfortable condition where you cannot have anything too hot or cold. It can be treated using dental lasers that seal tubules on the sensitive tooth's root, thus solving the problem at hand.

Most common soft tissue procedures

Gummy Smile

In certain cases, gum tissues cover the tooth and lead to a condition called "gummy smile" This can be fixed with lasers by readjusting and reshaping gum tissues.

Tongue frenulum

A laser frenectomy can be beneficial for those that have a thick or tight frenulum (the fold of skin under the front part of the tongue that anchors to the mouth floor). This procedure aids children who are tongue-tied, have trouble breastfeeding, or have a speech impediment due to a limited frenulum.

Pros of using laser dentistry

There are many benefits of using laser, for dental procedures

Using lasers for some treatments causes less bleeding, and is also virtually less painful.

For some procedures anaesthesia is not required, so you won’t not feel your gums and tongue.

Using a laser causes considerably less tissue damage surrounding the area, which cannot be said for traditional treatment.

The wounds heal faster and the rate of tissue regenerating is also higher which is also precise than conventional methods.

Less chances of bacterial infection because lasers sterilize the region.

Cons of using laser dentistry

It is quite costly compared to using drilling tools.

Laser dentistry cannot be used for all treatments and procedures. For instance, Lasers cannot be used to fill cavities between teeth, around old fillings, or massive cavities requiring crown preparation. Lasers often can't be used to extract broken crowns or silver fillings, or to prepare teeth for bridges. These are some cases where lasers cannot be used, but with advancements they can be used in future.

Bottom line

The risk associated with laser dentistry is very small like there are some risks associated with traditional methods too. So, if sharp dental tools are the only hindrance not allowing you to go to the dentist, then try laser dentistry. Look for a qualified and experienced dentist to undergo the procedure and you are all set.
