Ukulele is an amazing instrument to learn and play with simplicity while enhancing social connections. It grants schools and institutions a perfect alternative to the recorder for young students to learn, strum and sing along to, either by one’s self or a group of friends. Both adult and kids ukuleles resemble a small guitar with fretted fingerboard and total of four strings that are strummed to produce different notes.

History of Ukulele

Ukulele is one of the rarest instruments that display rich history and affluent ethnicity. Originated in Hawaii in 1800s, it has found a reputed position for itself in both traditional and modern music. The word ukulele means "jumping flea" and it was first brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. Soon, it gained popularity in different parts of America during the twentieth century right before spreading its influence to the rest of the world.

Deciding the size and types of Ukuleles

Ukuleles are available in 4 different sizes. The oldest Ukulele is of smallest size and is commonly named as soprano or standard sized ukulele. In 1920,s, second breed of ukulele came into existence and it was called The concert ukulele. The instrument was slightly larger than its predecessor and it had much deeper tone than the soprano. Few years later, a ukulele with increased size, enhanced sound quality and a deepened tone was developed. It was named as the tenor ukulele. However, it was in 1940s that the largest sized ukulele was created under the popular name of baritone. Sopranino and bass is another less common ukulele available in the market.

In recent times, countries like China and Indonesia have developed Mahalo ukuleles which are light and less expensive. Due to their bright colors and low price tags, Mahalos are very popular in countries like UK where they are used by school children to learn the art of music with this fabulous instrument. Maholo ukuleles have two variants - one is the pink ukulele (popular mostly amongst girls) and the other one is Flying V ukulele.

Kids Ukuleles

As exciting it is to hear that your child wants to learn playing ukulele, finding the right one for your child can be a tricky job. As you know, ukulele comes in varied shapes and sized. But if you are on a search for buying one that suits your child, soprano - one of the finest kid’s ukuleles, is what you should opt for. Being smallest in size, soprano is a perfect fit for your child who is beginning to create his own harmony through ukulele sound and tones. Various online music stores offer different Soprano ukuleles for sale that are available in various shapes and colors. For children, the shape of the ukulele is largely down to the preferences, tastes and comfort of instrument handling.

Overall, ukuleles are wonderful instruments built for performers of all ages. With the help of a well suited and quality ukulele, you will be able to take your listeners on a warm musical journey through harmonious tones and adaptable versatility.
