As a businessman or woman, can you imagine manufacturing something and not being able to deliver that product to your customers? Sounds like a nightmare, doesn’t it? We often ignore the importance of basic items around us which are not directly meant for our consumption but allow the use of other products. Pallets are one such item of daily use in industries and markets which are not given their due recognition. These are flat objects that facilitate transportation of material in a stable manner.

Types

Pallets vary primarily, on the basis of their material nature and size. Different manufacturers and suppliers select them on the basis of products they need to transport. On the basis of material, they can be categorized as follows:

Wooden Pallets- Over the years, wooden pallets have been most extensively used for the carriage of products all over the world. Wood has the required strength, durability and functionality to suit this purpose. Wood is readily available and is easy to make into pallets at very reasonable prices. However, the fasteners on them can damage the products. Another disadvantage is that wood gives off moisture. Yet, the benefits associated with wooden pallets outweigh the limitations.

Plastic Pallets- Although, the cost of plastic pallets is higher than wooden pallets, they are being used in increased numbers due to their durability and suitability for all weathers. The plastic pallets are bug free and easy to clean, which reduces their maintenance cost. Additionally, they can be moulded into different shapes as per the requirement. However, they are low on stiffness and difficult to prototype. They are used at places where products are lighter in nature, such as, pharmaceuticals, dairy and beverages amongst others.

Metal Pallets- These are the least used pallets in the market owing mainly to their high procurement cost. The metal pallets could be made with carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. These are preferred for indoor use when high levels of sanitation are needed and the material to be transported is heavy weight. Compared to wood, they have a longer life, demand less maintenance cost and can be resold for recycling purposes.

Conclusion

Pallets are the chains that connect manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and consumers. Without a transportation infrastructure, it is not possible to keep the business cycle going. The use of pallets reduces the cost of transportation very significantly and improves the efficiency in supply. This is why Pallets are a much needed element for every business. One should make a wise choice before selecting the pallets to draw maximum benefits from them.
