Nine Reasons You are Not Getting Hired as a Bodyguard

Not landing the job you wanted is an inevitable aspect of the bodyguard job search. Knowing why you cannot get a job will help you better prepare for the rest of your job hunt and land an excellent position.

This article will discuss the nine most common reasons why you are not being hired:

  • You have a weak foundation

Executive protection specialists today are professionally trained. If you do not have any training on your résumé, consider investing in your future by enrolling in a bodyguard training course at one of the recognized bodyguard schools in your city.

  • You have sent out poor résumés

Revisit your résumé. Its sole purpose should be to open doors of opportunity. It is neither an application form nor your memoir. Focus on what you can offer the employer now rather than what you have done in the past.

  • You are speaking to the wrong people

So you say you have sent out 50 résumés but have not gotten any responses. Have you done your homework on the companies to which you have sent your materials? Did you follow the submission instructions precisely? Are you sure they are even hiring?

  • You are not following up

Do not just sit there and wait for a call after you have sent out your résumé. Step up to the plate and go after that job. Never send a résumé without following up with a phone call or, at the very least, an email to confirm that the employer received it. However, keep in mind that the line between persistence and pestering is thin—maintain consistency in your follow-ups, but do not go so far as to become a pest.

  • You are not networking

It would help if you got out there, tell everyone who you are and what you do, and never pass up an opportunity to hand out a business card. The more potential employers who know who you are and that you are ready to work, the better.

  • You are not thinking outside the box

Executive protection officers are rarely always working. Consider adding a string to your bows, such as event security or surveillance. You may chuckle at the prospect of undertaking these menial security jobs, but they always provide an excellent opportunity to network.

Consider whom you could write to inform them that you are available for work. Who has not already seen a copy of your résumé? Write to individuals, such as industry leaders, the rich and famous, or their managers. They can only say no or ignore, but what if they say yes?

  • There is no work

Executive protection is a desirable career, yet there is not always enough work to go around. Even the best officers sometimes go days (or weeks and even months) without working. We all like to take a little break between jobs but do not get accustomed to long stretches of not doing anything. Be proactive and start looking for new contracts as soon as the previous one expires.

  • You have given up

Many people have abandoned the bodyguard industry before they even begin, including some who have spent years wondering "how to become a bodyguard?" Executive protection is a challenging career to enter. One thing is for sure, though: those who are tenacious and motivated to succeed will find success. Do not give up if this is the career you want.

There you have it: nine reasons why you are not being picked for the job you want. Keep these in mind while you look for your next job, and you will land a fantastic one.
