The sound originates as the vibration that disturbs the air pressure and hits our eardrums. The frequency of a sound wave determines how our brain processes that sound and interprets it as a pitch. A lower frequency makes a lower pitch while a high frequency produces a higher pitch. These notes generate from the vibration from the combustion in the cylinders and the pressure in the exhaust system. A root note is built on its pitch and is defined as its dominant frequency.

What are the best sounding engines?

Electric cars are much better because of charging convenience, instant torque, environmentally friendly, and simplicity. But the one quality that is not present in electric cars is the sound. In most cars such as the Mini Cooper S R53 exhaust system is replaced with an exquisite exhaust system that optimizes the performance and sound. However, there are some of the engine designs that are considered the best sounding engines of the last decade. These are:

1.Best Sounding V8

The sound of the V8 engine is determined by the exhaust, crankshaft, and intake. The two explosions on a given cylinder bank per rotation make it sound growly at low revs. According to the experience of people, the V8 engine has the best exhaust note. A Ferrari 458’s F136 V8 engine is common and basic but revving to 9,000 rpm, it produces 597 horsepower. And it is the most mellifluous sound from a car. Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the loudest V8.

2. Best Sounding W16

Well, Bugatti is the only manufacturer of the engine with 16 pistons. Bugatti’s W16 is hugely wide but short compared to the cars with fewer pistons. Bugatti Veyron is probably the most significant car and has a loud note. It has four turbochargers but not befitting the fastest car.

3. Best Sounding V12

The 5.2-liter version of the DB11 Aston martin has the most fulfilling and sustaining sound. A V12 engine has 12 cylinders and is larger than V8. If the space is limited in a vehicle is limited, V12 is not a good choice. Due to having more cylinders, V12 engines consume more fuel than V8.

4. Best Sounding V10

If compared to V8 and V12, they all sound well. The LF-A Yamaha developed 4.8-litre V10 produced 552 horsepower and spin from idle to 9,000 rpm in jus.6 sec. It sounds like a combination of Ferrari and dodges viper.

5. Best Sounding V6

V6 now sounds better than the same car’s V8 option and surprisingly, some time ago, for the people who could not afford V8, V6 was the second thought. Jaguar F-type is supercharged V8 is the sweet-sounding engine but many people think that V6 is the better option despite low performance. It revs faster and sounds sophisticated. However, these both are designed on the same block.

General exhaust note depends on the camshaft timing, crank timing, and exhaust modifications. Well, there is a subtle difference in sound between OHC, DOHC and push rod, etc. However, car enthusiasts and expert mechanics can tell the name of the car by its firing order and exhaust note.
