The India Book Market Report (2016) reveals that India occupies the sixth position in terms of the largest publishers in the world. Besides, it is in the second position among the largest English-language book publication globally.The Nielsen Report, 2016, reveals that the book publishing industry in India stands at INR 47,000 crore. This is equivalent to $6.76 billion and is largely led by educational books. This sector has a projected growth rate of 19.3% till 2020.On average, India witnesses the publication of almost 250 books on a daily basis.Out of all the books sold in India, English books account for 55%, while Hindi books account for 35%. The remaining portion is largely constituted by books printed in regional languages.As much as 65% of the English-language books that are sold in India comes from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.With more than 9,000 publishers, India occupies the third position in the world, considering the publication of English-language books. Presently, over 70% of the publishers have digitized these contents and produced eBooks.An average Indian completes reading around 2.1 books a week, contrary to the popular belief. The World Culture Score Index reveals that Indian people spend a greater amount of time in reading, as compared to other people across the globe.Apart from this, books have turned out to be an effective category of publications for eCommerce businesses. Interestingly, books constitute around 15% of the overall trade carried out through eCommerce websites.The category ‘General and Literary Fiction’ ranks in the first position in terms of genres among all the segments in India. Among academic books, the category ‘test prep’ emerged as the most sought-after one.Presently, online book sales account for around 50% of the total sales in India.Considering all the books that are published in India, 90% record less than 2,000 copies sale each year. Another 9% records sales between 2K and 10K copies in a year. When a book crosses the 10K milestone within one year of being published, it is considered to be a bestseller.
