Typical policies and procedures manual will outline all of the services and programs that a Group Home provides. Often times, these policies and procedures guide the type of activities the organization performs with regards to patient care, including counseling, social interaction, and exercise. A very important aspect of Group Home is the involvement of the patient and their families. Family members play a very big role in caring for a terminally ill person and their concerns are often the driving force behind the decision to opt into Group Home. Therefore, the policies and procedures that are contained within Group Home Policies and Procedures Manuals should address the desires and needs of families when it comes to the care of their loved one.

Group Home Policies and Procedures Manuals are not necessarily difficult to understand. They outline in clear terms what a Group Home provider and/or organization can provide to a patient and their families during the course of their Group Home care. Many times, the most commonly requested information is regarding the medications that are provided to the terminally ill patient as part of their Group Home program. Other requests might be more geared towards easing the stress of the end of life for the patient. However, the policies and procedures manual should address all of the requests made by the families and the Group Home provider.

Group home policies and procedures manuals should also include all of the details about the termination of life care for the patient. This includes the decision to provide Group Home care and the specific protocols for withdrawal of non-medical care and all of the palliative services that are provided to the patient and their families throughout the course of their end-of-life care. There may also be detailed information on the termination of life support for those individuals who are not expected to recover from terminal illness within one year. If the Group Home provider is also handling the patient's death records, then there should be an established process for this as well.

Additionally, the policies should also address emotional and spiritual support that is extended to those who are terminally ill. These policies should outline the specific steps that will be taken should the terminally ill individual become agitated or depressed. The policy should also explain what will be done if the terminally ill patient becomes too upset or expresses fear during the Group Home policies interview or during the intake process. For instance, if the patient becomes extremely upset at having to make questions or make a statement prior to receiving Group Home care, then this should be documented. This documentation may also be used in the event that the Group Home provider is reviewing the family's medical records to identify certain medical conditions, allergies, medications and other illnesses that may have been prevalent in the patient's medical history.

Good Group Home policies and procedures manual should outline how those families that choose assisted dying can take control of their lives. The policy should outline what families should do when the terminally ill individual's wishes are not being considered by the patient or his or her family. Even if the patient has a terminal illness, the family should still have the option of determining how he or she wants to end his or her life.

Lastly, the manual should outline what happens to families that violate the terms and conditions outlined in the policy. Many times it is easy for families to get caught up in the emotion and stress associated with the end of a loved one's life. It is easy to make promises that you cannot keep. Unfortunately, it is also easy to break these promises, causing more stress for the terminally ill individual and his or her family. Good Group Home policies manual should outline what happens when these kinds of mistakes are made.
