Load cells are articles that are not recognized popularly. The primary reason behind this has to do with the fact that the application of this device is rather localized. And so, the people whose professions do not require the use of a transducer, are rarely aware of its uses. But as for the people who make extensive use of the device, harboring an equally extensive knowledge of its types uses, and underlying nuances is extremely important.

For starters, understanding the basic working principle of a load cell provides a perspective, upon which one can decide on their load cell type requirement. As mentioned earlier, a load cell is a sophisticated transducer, that converts mechanical energy of the likes of compression, tension, pressure, torque, etc., into electric signals. This signal helps with the measurement of the force that was initially applied to the transducer. The level of precision offered by the device is what sets it apart, and the load cell manufacturers in India do not disappoint.

Thanks to the superior quality of the product, the Cumulative Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of load cells is projected to be a decent 3.73% over the next couple of years (i.e., 2023). Even though it might not look like it at first glance, this data, which was retrieved from a market survey of 2017, is quite impressive.

Coming to the working mechanism, a load cell device consists of 2 important parts; a central spring system, and 4 strain gauges. Upon the application of load, the spring element gets compressed and this causes the strain gauges to rearrange themselves. This rearrangement is what initiates the electric signal, which then gets relayed to provide the end-user with an accurate measurement of the load applied on the device.

Having been clarified on the working procedure, there are other important aspects that one needs to be aware of, to make the best choice.

  • The different variants: Shear Beam Load Cells:

Available in two different variants, single-ended and double-ended load cell, the latter of the two has a plethora of applications across different industries. These industries include construction, aviation, automotive, steel manufacturing, etc.

  • Compression Load Cells:

As the name suggests, the principle working of this variant involves the compression effect that the load produces at a single point along its axis. The weighbridge load cell, that is used for weighing trucks and rail containers.

  • The application:

The use, for which you are relying on a load cell, is another decisive aspect to be factored in. Consider the following two prospects for an easy evaluation.

  • Settings:

Whether it is a harsh industrial setting or otherwise, the environment in which the load cell is to be used decides the level of durability required. Stainless steel load cells are the best option for industrial settings.

  • Specifications:

The minimum threshold and peak loads supported, type of force involved, etc., are important details that are to be prioritized.

Although these are some of the most important aspects, they aren’t the only aspects to worry about. Make thorough research and try to get a load cell that is best for your use.
