Princess Noriko of Takamado on Sunday married the eldest son of the chief priest at Izumo Taisha, a major Shinto shrine in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture.

Princess Noriko, 26, the second daughter of the late Prince Takamado, a cousin of the Emperor, married Kunimaro Senge, 41, who assists his father at the shrine.

At a ceremony attended by Noriko’s mother Hisako, her elder sister Tsuguko and younger sister Ayako as well as Senge’s parents, the bride and groom made wedding vows before the god of marriage at the shrine. The ceremony had a total of 21 participants.

Princess Noriko is the first female member of the Imperial family who has married since then Princess Sayako, the Emperor’s daughter and now Sayako Kuroda, married a Tokyo metropolitan government official in November 2005.

She will lose her Imperial status and move to Izumo to start her life as Noriko Senge. The two have no plans to go on a honeymoon.

After the ceremony, Noriko said, "I feel relaxed as the ceremony has gone very smoothly," and Senge commented, "I have a very bright feeling." Both gave the remarks with smiles.

With a traditional coiffure called osuberakashi for noble women in the Heian period, the princess wore a red kouchigi robe and a nagabakama long trailing skirt at the ceremony. Senge was clothed in traditional court dress.

The kouchigi was handed down to Princess Yuriko, grandmother of Noriko and the wife of Prince Takahito of Mikasa, uncle of the Emperor, from Empress Teimei, the wife of Emperor Yoshihito in the Taisho era, father of the Emperor’s father. The nagabakama was made newly from cloth handed down from Empress Teimei.

After a purification rite, Nagahiko Senge, uncle of the groom and the master of ceremonies, offered a prayer. He conveyed the teachings of the gods about a desirable husband and wife.

The groom offered written nuptial vows before the god. In the vows, he expressed gratitude for meeting Noriko and pledged they would work together.

The bride and groom then offered sacred tree branches, bowed and exchanged nuptial cups of sake.

After the ceremony, a notification of their marriage was submitted to and received by a branch of the Izumo city office at the shrine.
