Step by Step tutorials

Step 1 : Draw Basic Outlines

Drawing a beard outline is a little easier, so you can use any method in which you are good, here I’m using free hand method to draw outline. You can use HB pencil or lighter grade pencil for this, also try to achieve maximum accuracy to avoid further trouble in shading.

Step 2 : Light shading/ First layer

After making the outline, will do light and plane shedding with the help of HB pencil, remember that the shading should be very light so that it can blend well, use back and forth motion for consistency. Blend with soft brush or cotton.

Step 3 : Darker shading/ Second layer

Using 2B pencil, we will now draw a lot of small lines in the direction of hair. Here you have to do shading lightly, there is no need to give pressure, but where the amount of beard is high or we can say density of beard is high, it can darken slightly. If you apply pressure in lighter area, then there may be a problem with highlight further. And then lightly blend with cotton or soft brush.

Step 4 : Darker shading

Now to make beard hair, I will use 4B mechanical pencil(0.5mm) and 8B pencil. You will have to thoroughly observe the reference and look at the beard hair to see where it is dark and where it is light. In lighter area we will shade with mechanical pencil and for Dark area we will use 8B pencil with texture of hair. Draw number of small lines depending on length of beard in the direction of hair, while doing this you have to patient. And then lightly blend with cotton or soft brush.

Step 5 : Final shading

Even after so much layering, you will see that there is a need to shading and darkening, for this, using 8B or 10B pencil will shade in the dark area. Always remember that the darker the reference, the more layering is required for realistic shading.

Step 6 : Highlights

With the help of the tombow monozero eraser, we will make white small lines in the direction of dark lines where it is necessary to make the beard look realistic. Highlights can make your painting or drawing "pop" or "shining".

Step 6 : Final Finishing

After doing all above steps, if there is a lack of some things or need to add something, then we fix it or do it, i.e. drawing some hair at the bottom of the beard, covering extra highlights, and blending if necessary.
