Did you know that the average car contains about 23kg of copper? This metal is mainly used in electrical components because it’s an excellent conductor of electricity. But what happens to all the copper left in damaged and unused vehicles? Most of them end up as Sydney copper scraps that can be recycled for a better purpose!

Types Of Copper Scraps In Sydney

If you’re planning to sell copper scraps, it’s important to understand that there isn’t just one type of material. In fact, scraps are separated into five different categories:

  • Bright Copper

Bright copper is clean, bare, uncoated, and unalloyed copper wire often considered the most valuable type of copper metal. You can find it in building constructions, especially inside thick electrical cables, motors, and transformers.

Before selling, make sure to strip bright copper of its insulation, paint, and other impurities.

  • No. 1 Copper

Copper no. 1 is clean, untinned, uncoated, and unalloyed copper found in wires and cables. It’s the highest rank of scrap copper tubing, known for its shiny appearance.

  • No. 2 Copper

Unlike copper no. 1, this type of copper does not have a shiny appearance. Instead, it looks quite old, with dirty solder joints and other impurities. You can find these metals in electric motors, AC lines, water lines, and plumbing.

  • Copper Domestic

Copper domestic only contains about 88% copper, usually found in plumbing equipment, building sites, and kerbside collections.

  • Insulated Wires

You might be most familiar with copper being used in insulated wires, used in a wide variety of industrial applications. For instance, high-grade insulated wires have about 85% copper, primarily used underground wiring and electrical panels.

Meanwhile, low-grade wires only have about 30% copper used in telecommunication and transportation.

What’s great is that not only can copper scraps be recycled; almost every type of metal, including aluminium, steel, and brass, are continuously reusable, too. They do not lose any quality in performance, helping save the environment over and over.

The Benefits Of Recycling Sydney Copper Scraps

Recycling copper and other scrap metals can do wonders for the environment. For instance, copper mining is known to contribute to land degradation, water contamination, and air pollution, among other things.

On the other hand, recycling helps reduce toxic emissions, manage energy consumption, and ultimately preserve non-renewable resources. The process is also great for the economy. In fact, almost half a million jobs have been created thanks to the scrap metal recycling industry!
