A purlin is covering over the roof which can be in horizontal or longitudinal form and is used for giving strength to the roof. There are three types of roof purlin i.e. purlin plate, principal purlin and also a common purlin. Different form of purlins can be used in different ways for getting the construction done. These are steel structures that are designed and protected in a suitable way to give it a proper shape such that it can be put to further use. The designing and processing is done with the help of refinement processes.

Objectives of refinement processes

  • To enable lateral translation of the whole compilation of purlins.
  • To disable any kind of rotation or twists and turning in the roofing.
  • To put in the horizontal flange arrangement to make the roof strong.

Types of purlin

There are three types which are discussed in detail below;

  • Purlin plate: It is also called as an arcade plate. The plate is one of the major, horizontal or supporting timbers. These plates are beams which shall support the span of rafters and posts. This support allows longer spans which enables the building to sustain for long. They are almost found in large buildings or barns which have to have strong base.
  • Principal purlin: They are also known as major purlin or side purlin. These are supported by the principal or common rafters and it is also known as double roof.
  • Common purlin: It is also called as major rafter minor purlin system. These
roof purlins can be trenched by the top sides of principal rafters. The purlin may allow a board roof, a roof which is having vertical laid boards and it is all covered with battens and then another layer of boards.

How to achieve quality in work?

To achieve stability and quality in work it is important that the sideways are stabilized between both the flanges. This can be done by bracing such that they gets fastened together. The rotation between the purlin can also be controlled, with the help of lone line bracing. It is important that the crosswise braces are applied correctly which gives strength and reliability.

Press forming can also be adopted for the efficient fixing of the purlin. It relates to a metal working process in which the flat blank is pushed with a punch to form a three dimensional shape. Once the metal gets a shape it can be further reshaped with the combination of drawings or stretching, ironing and also by using the blending process. It ensures stability within the metal and also reduces the risk of dislocation of metals. Hence press forming has also emerged as one of the most successful methods for maintaining quality check on purlin.

It is hence necessary that for any purlin buttressing method is necessary and to have the purlin placed in regular intervals and also properly engineered. With the various techniques and quality checks the manufacturers can ensure to supply some of the best quality materials to the customers thus suiting their needs and requirements and also adhering to the quality standards.
