You use a laptop almost every day. There is always a chance that it could get problems because of its daily use and regularity. There are several issues a laptop can create, its battery might get fused, its screen might get fluctuated, and it could give you a very hard time when it gets filled with thousands of documents over a span of years.

The basic problems include, Laptops are a particular problem because they are miniaturized – all parts are compact and stuck in a very small space. Worse, some parts are only made to fit a specific machine. While a desktop computer’s external keyboard is turned off. -the shelf component, which you can replace for a few dollars, that of a laptop is usually fit for a single machine (or brand of a computer), and a replacement done by a dealer can cost you a quarter of the price of a new machine!

Before trying to repair your laptop on your own, look out for these steps:

Be sensible with the laptop’s warranty period, if your laptop is covered with a warranty, make sure you get it at the store for any repairs for free.

A laptop is an electrical appliance, it requires safe use as it could harm you with its external transformers, which carry voltages of high level that can trigger your balance and health.

If you’re a rookie, you might get the laptop damaged. You should use anti-static protection to avoid the damage of chips.

Steps to fix a laptop at home:
  • Take a Backup – If your computer is still running, back up your entire hard drive before you begin. If your computer does not start to create a backup, you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM or bootable floppy disk.
  • One thing to keep in mind, on the side, is that just backing up when your computer has just crashed is pretty silly. Get in the habit of making backups on a regular basis. Corporate IT departments usually back up all of their systems.
  • While working from home, you should make sure to back up the documents folder on my hard drive once a week – it takes about a minute to put everything on a USB memory stick to copy and overwrite one of the backup copies of the previous one.
  • Try to organize your computer so that items that change regularly are in one place and can be copied more quickly.
  • Save changed items (perhaps your photo or music collection) less often. There are also many inexpensive and secure cloud-based storage systems that you can use to back up your files online.
  • Search for your symptoms – If your machine doesn’t show a proper symptom, check for symptoms on your favorite search engine.
  • For example – Peter found that the LCD screen inverter on one of his older laptops needed to be replaced – the screen flickered and occasionally went dark, but he could still see what was written on it very clearly. After learning about the risks of replacing an inverter (it’s a high voltage component), he took the correct precautions, then removed a few screws from the bottom of my laptop screen and ventured inside.
  • He got the required part from eBay and got it fixed in less than 30 seconds. It feels amazing to have turned a useless machine that was destined for the landfill into something new with practically no effort, AND the repaired machine still works a good 10 years later.
  • Look for suitable spare parts – Once you know the problem with your computer, you usually need to replace one or more parts. Finding the right part is half the battle when it comes to repairs.
  • Provided they can be reached, and installing replacement parts is often a lot easier than you know. The parts that are most likely to go wrong are under the small flaps on the bottom of your machine.
  • Just read the part number and put it on Google or eBay, and look for similar parts. You can either find an official replacement or cheaper equivalents built by different companies.
  • On eBay, you can find used parts salvaged from broken laptops. There are also many broken laptops for sale on eBay, and it can be cheaper to buy a similar laptop that consists of the spares and repair version of your machine and salvage the correct parts than to worry about finding a specific part all the time it gets damaged.
  • Take care while you fit the spares – The important laptop parts are usually modular and designed to be interchangeable.
  • Things like a laptop keyboard, for example, just clip it to the motherboard with a small clip that you can remove yourself.
  • The broken "mechanical" parts of your laptop are a little more difficult to replace and require a little dexterity and technical skill.
  • For example, laptops that are repeatedly opened and closed will eventually suffer from broken hinges. Replacing such parts can be tricky. You often have to remove some screws and other decorative pieces, and there is a little bit of scope for damage to your machine in the process. Go slowly, be patient, and take close-ups at each stage, so you know exactly where everything went. That makes it easier to reset everything later.
