What is Provincial Nomination Program?

The Provincial Nominee Program in Canada has increased in both size and importance since its inception. It is currently the country’s second-largest economic immigration program. The PNP allows participating Canadian territories and provinces to propose a set number of economic immigrants for a permanent residency each year. There are presently over 60 PNP streams spread throughout 11 provinces and territories, each one targeting immigrants who meet specific labour markets along with economic demands in those areas.

How does the Provincial Nominee Program or PNP in Edmonton, AB works?

Here, we have outlined the requirements of the Provincial Nominee Program in Edmonton, AB, in detail. The program is specifically designed for immigrant workers who:

  • Have the required skills, work experience and qualifications to contribute to a specific territory’s or province’s economy,
  • Wish to be a part or live in that particular province and
  • Wish to become permanent Canadian residents.
  • Each province and territory has a specific target group whom they may target, which is as follows:

  • Business owners,
  • Students,
  • Skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • What are the application options?

Which Provincial Nominee Program stream you will be applying to will determine your application method. You may be required to apply either on paper or online via Express Entry. You’ll be required to pass a medical exam and a police check as part of the application process (certificate). These checks are necessary for everyone, regardless of where they wish to live in Canada.

    Paper-based process

In the paper-based process, you are required to:

  • submit an application for nomination through a non-Express Entry stream to the province or territory.
  • meet the province’s eligibility standards before being nominated.
  • file a written application for permanent resident status to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada once you have been nominated.
  • pass a medical checkup and a background check (certificate). No matter where you intend to live in Canada, you must have these clearances.
  • Important note: The paper-based application processing duration is usually longer, unlike the express entry process.

    Express Entry process

There are two ways to apply for the online Express Entry process, which are as follows:

  • You apply for a nomination under the Express Entry stream by contacting the province or territory.
  • If a territory or province agrees to nominate you, you should create a profile on Express Entry (or update your existing profile) and confirm that you have been nominated.
  • OR

  • You create a profile on Express Entry and mention the territories or provinces you are interested in.
  • You should contact a province or territory directly if it shares with you a "notification of interest" to your account.
  • If you are nominated, the province or territory will offer it to you electronically through your account, from where you can accept it.
  • In both the paper-based and Express Entry process, you must:

  • meet the eligibility criteria of the territory or province,
  • fill out an Express Entry profile and demonstrate that you meet the Express Entry minimal requirements, which include being qualified for one of the immigration programs covered by the program.
  • submit an electronic application to IRCC upon receiving an invitation to apply.
