Risk of mycotoxin contamination in poultry feed
Amid rapid changes in the global meat production domain, the poultry sector has emerged as a strong contender in recent years. The evolution of poultry demand over the years has led producers to invest heavily in the management of livestock health, with an aim to enhance broiler growth and improved metabolism and life-cycles in breeders and layers. Mycotoxin contamination of animal feed is among the main challenges faced by poultry producers. These toxins can have several adverse effects on poultry livestock performance, productivity, and liveability.
While mycotoxins like ZEN (zearalenone), FUM (fumonisins), and DON (deoxynivalenol) are often overlooked in poultry applications, due to the less obvious or visible impact on the livestock, numerous scientific and commercial studies have revealed that these Fusarium mycotoxins are responsible for some significant diseases that affect poultry. For example, results from a research study have shown that FUM and DON can decrease the animal’s antibody response to IBV (Infectious Bronchitis Virus) and ND (Newcastle Disease).
Similarly, an Austria-based experiment that involved the feeding of a DOM-contaminated diet showed reduced serum antibody titers against the IBV vaccine, in comparison with control diets. As poultry producers become more attuned to the detrimental impacts of mycotoxins in poultry, the onus on the feed mycotoxin binders industry is growing stronger, as supervision and mitigation become an increasingly essential part of a robust mycotoxin risk management program.
To that end, in January 2020, Biochem announced the expansion of its mycotoxin management portfolio, via the launch of the new B.I.O.Tox® Activ8 Mycotoxin Binder. The presence of activated adsorbents like Bentonite and Sepiolite and natural detoxifiers like Polyphenols and Silybum Marianum in the mycotoxin binding agent facilitates an extended adsorption profile and superior binding abilities for Fusarium toxins, particularly Deoxynivalenol. The novel toxin binder for animal feed was developed to impart immune-stimulating and anti-inflammatory effects on the animal’s health.
