Sambo is similar in many ways to judo and jujitsu but also incorporates different types of wrestling and various self-defense systems. It is a martial art and combat sport. The name is an acronym that literally means "self-defense without weapons".

Fedor Emelianenko is a Russian heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter and champion of sambo. Several times world champion in sambo, he is considered the best MMA fighter of all time. He is the current World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts Heavyweight Champion and former and final Pride heavyweight champion. He has only four losses in over thirty fights.

Fedor was born on September 28, 1976 in Ukraine. His Mother Olga is a teacher and Father Vladimir is an engineer, he also has older sister and two younger brothers, one of whom named Alexander is also an MMA fighter. His youngest brother Ivan, is also involved in martial arts. In 1999, Fyodor married his wife Oksana, with whom they have a daughter named Masha.

In 1991, he completed his high school studies and thereafter graduated in 1994 with hounours from a pro trade school. Fyodor started training sambo and judo as a child in the school of Vasily Ivanovich Gavrilov and a little later moved to his current and until now coach Vladimir Mikhailovich Voronov. An interesting fact is that in an interview with a majortotosite.pro Japanese magazine, Emelianenko's coach said that as a child he was not one of the strongest players or the most promising. What set him apart from others was his perseverance. Although so far he has trained hard and reached good physical development, he stopped being active in judo and sambo. However, in 1997 he received an official certificate in these two sports.

Fedor sambo career so far has seen him win the World Combat Sambo Championship for times, twice in Thessaloniki and Panama City, twice in Prague in 2005 and 2007 respectively. He also won a Bronze medal at the 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships held in St, Petersburg and a Gold medal in 2009's Russian Combat Sambo Championship among others.

His enviable accomplishments earned him several awards and he is named as the all time greatest MMA Heavyweight fighter by ESPN, Fight Matrix and Sherdog among others. Broadly
