Key Points that Every High Capacity Telehandler Operator Should Know
Posted: Aug 19, 2021
A high capacity telehandler is a multi-dimensional equipment that completes the work efficiently of more than one machine. It can be seen on a construction site where it is used for lifting loads and make people reach heights for construction or maintenance work. However, rigorous training is required to operate telehandlers onsite. It is the decision of the company whether to purchase a telehandler or rent it till the requirement fulfills. For construction companies with regular projects, it is advisable to buy a high capacity telehandler for regular use. It is the legal and personal duty of the operator to use the telehandler wisely as they carry heavy loads and workers to a height where fall accidents are common.
Every telehandler operator must develop a strategic method to use it onsite. Apart from learning how to operate telehandlers, they should also be trained in the identification of hazards, evaluation of risk, and its control measures required to work with safety. Since they lift loads, it is necessary to inspect the equipment for any risk assessment. These factors should be compiled and developed in a coherent plan.
It should also include rescue procedures and a plan to immediately control any unforeseen incident on the construction site. It is important to remember that lifting a particular load and placing it in a different location is machine-based work but carried by human beings. So, the operator has to ensure the safety of the life of workers, pedestrians, goods and must have a keen knowledge with focus and attentiveness on how they are performing their tasks.
Here are some key points that every high capacity telehandler operator must know during their training, and when they are ready to handle the machine on the construction site.
Be in touch with your supervisor:
The supervisor or the senior level engineers are also equally responsible for any incident on the site. Especially, when it comes to operating a telehandler, it should be checked and deeply inspected before use. If the operator finds it not safe to start work, he/she must immediately inform the supervisor.
Also, if the operator feels that it is not safe to carry on the work, then it must be informed to the supervisor to stop the work. Operating a defective telehandler is risky. One should always follow the instruction manual given by the manufacturer.
Ensure you’re trained and able to operate telehandlers:
The supervisors have to ensure that the operator is completely trained and equipped with every necessity. He/she should be familiarized with the type of telehandler, functions, how to operate it, and what to do in an emergency. The operator should have a clear perspective on when to stop working, when to connect with the supervisor for assistance, and most important; avoid onsite accidents.
Verification of the Telehandlers:
Before starting to operate a telehandler, the operator must verify with the supervisor on its condition, a current thorough examination report, and its suitable maintenance. After verification, they can start their work immediately.
Daily Checks and Inspection:
Construction companies employ personnel and laborers on a shift basis. The high capacity telehandler operator should deeply inspect and check the machine before their shift starts. Any technical fault must be reported to the supervisor immediately
Have a brief knowledge of the site condition:
Every construction site is not the same. There can be rough terrains in some sites and some locations can be plain and normal. Apart from the condition of telehandlers, it is also mandatory to know the condition where you will be operating them. On rough terrains, you cannot use small telehandlers as they can break down and face immense wear and tear. Be aware of slopes, ground conditions, visibility, pedestrians, and other potential hazards.
Comfortability:
It is very important to ensure that you are comfortable with the task. Here the word comfortability means you are aware and comfortable with machine handling before and during its operation. Make use of a seat belt and reduce the risk of injury.
Comply with the legal requirements:
A construction company should mandatorily comply with all the legal requirements related to construction and the use of heavy equipment on the site.
Do Not Overload the Telehandlers:
Even if it is a high capacity telehandler, one should not overload it. Check the load chart and know the telehandler’s limitation of lifting loads. They are machines not magic!
